Part One To use this template, you will first select one option from the list provided in the Module Three Activity Guidelines and Rubric. Address each of the rubric criteria listed below with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences per bullet. Support your answers with a credible source when necessary. Describe the possible biological causes of your selection. [Insert D text] Depressi on has had a couple different types of biological causes , some of these can be inherited and others can just develop over time. One of the causes that is genetics, but this does not mean that you give depression to a child by genes. What this full entails is that someone may pass down the gene that makes them more valuable to the illness as per “multiple large-scale GWAS analyses have now identified at least 87 reproducible genetic risk variants and implicate genetic pathways associated with excitatory neurotransmission, synaptic structure, and dendritic spine functions” . ( Charles 85) Another biological cause is h ormones when the brain doesn’t produce the correct am ount of specific hormones the person will begin to show depression like symptoms. This can very between men and women “ On average, women may also experience modestly different symptom profiles, for example, increased comorbid anxiety rates” . (Charles 85) Describe the possible psychological causes of your selection. [Insert text] Depression does not have one fixed set of psychological causes, there have been many people who have listed all types of psychological explanations that have impacted they think could of caused it. Some of the psychological triggers are traumatic events, these are life changing experiences that change who you are as a person. Some examples are rapes, near death experiences, and stressful situations. Another trigger people often call on is the childhood experiences , that while they were children, things that their parents did or things they went through could marked them and only starts affecting them years later. Childhood trauma can also range from people who didn’t grow up in complete or loving home, speaking from experience on this one not growing up in a home with mom and dad has given me all types of 1
issues ranging from confidence, to feeling loved and valued and these issued can be made worse when going through depression. Describe the possible social and cultural causes of your selection. [ Insert text] There is not a single social or cultural cause f or depression. But for example, a lot of people who experience depression will claim they don’t have interpersonal relationships. A lot of people also c laim that they don’t have friends or people they can g o to. Another social cause for depression is lack of social skills even when they want to try and become socia l to make friends, they find it impossible since they don’t have good socialize and it became even harder to make friends and this can also lead to lack of self esteem and lack of confidence. Cultural causes for depression tend to vary depending on what culture you are apart of. I say this because a lot of cultures apart vastly different from each other, I can say from experience that the Latino culture for example is to keep pushing and pushing until the goal is met which can be a good and bad thing depending on how extreme the family is because then issue like mental health are often over looked or seen as weakness. Describe the relationship between the biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors of your selection. [Insert text] Depression is a mixture of all three the biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors as they all play in part in someone getting depression as it is truly a illness that happen to anyone , anyplace at any time . The way that depression woks means this disease builds off all the fa ctors listed above, meaning that when one of those factors falls it usually doesn’t take long for another to fall as well. By the end someone who falls into severe depression usually has all three of the affected by depression and there is no for sure cure for depression. Depression has been a silent killer in the last decade or so the cry out for normalize mental health has finally come to the surface allowing people to speak about more and more. The thing that makes depression so effective at shutting people down is that by the time people really realize that they may have this illness they have already been suffering for a while and it can be a challenge to get them out of it. 2
