Olga Ramirez Instructor Jennifer Montgomery ECE 252 3 March 2024 Infant Toddler Curriculum: Social and Emotional Development 1. Define the concept of caregiver as secure base as it is related to attachment. Children who have a 'secure' attachment are generally able to be comforted by their caregivers when distressed and to use their caregiver as what is known as a 'secure base' from which to explore their environment when they are not distressed. They feel close, valued, and cared for by the caregiver. 2. What strategies can you utilize to support a child’s ability to “hold someone special in mind?” Children can engage in social play interactions with one another and when caregivers provide the necessary conditions. They can explore their feelings about other people and how they feel about them through social play. Play invitations, classroom environment, and the way the classroom is set up are a few examples of these opportunities. Becoming aware of our own emotional connection and bond with children is another tactic educators can use to promote a child's ability to "hold someone special in mind". Children are making decisions and pursuing their own interests based on the behavior they see around them. 3. Describe how you can support a child’s development of self by reading their emotional cues and providing responsive social interactions. I can support a child’s development of self by being responsive to the child’s attempts at interactions (model caring behaviors and empathy), building on what the child says or does, engaging in frequent developmentally appropriate social interactions with the child throughout the daily experiences and routines, and encouraging the child to use their words when conflicts arise. 4. Infants and toddlers are developing a wide range of emotions (trust, self-confidence, pride in accomplishment) how can you support this development through interactions and experiences within the classroom environment? I can support this development of a wide range of emotions by showing constant warmth and affection, being respectful and mindful, caring about every child under my care, giving effective praise, modeling appropriate behavior, and paying attention to their cues. Establishing a trusting relationship with the child is essential for the child’s social and emotional development.
5. Provide one example of a music and movement activity (repetitive interaction, chant, song) and discuss how this activity would support social play and interactions with peers. If Your Happy and You Know it song helps support singing, motor skills, and exploration of emotions. 6. Conduct online research to find an early childhood material that supports social- emotional development for infants and toddlers. Discuss how and why the material is developmentally appropriate for either young infants and/or toddlers. Provide a picture and/or detailed description of the material. 1. Describe how the material would be incorporated into the infant/toddler environment. The Baby Einstein Curiosity Clutch Twist and Pop would be incorporated into the infant and toddler environment during playtime and display the toy for them to play with, ignite curiosity, and engage with others. This toy is perfect for children 3 months and up. 2. How would you support engagement and interaction with the material? I would support engagement and interaction with the Baby Einstein Curiosity Clutch by introducing the children to shapes, sounds, colors, and textures of the toy which helps with building an understanding of cause and effect. 3. What would you say to the child as he/she is exploring the material? What I would say to the child as he/she is exploring the material is to mention the colors, shapes, sounds, and texture. Interact with the child not just through conversation but also by playing with them, making this toy more fun. 4. How does the material support social/emotional development? The Baby Einstein Curiosity Clutch supports social/emotional development as follows: a. Developmental benefits- Encourages fine motor skills and cause-and-effect concepts through active two-handed play. b. Keeps infants and toddlers curious- From grasping, pressing, and twisting to pop- it plays, the child will stay busy and entertained as they explore all the gadgets on the toy. c. Stimulates the senses- Rattle sounds and high-contrast patterns capture the child’s attention and promote sensory development. d. Sparks open-ended play- Inviting infants and toddlers to interact with the toy in endless combinations using their hands, learning problem-solving, sharing, and exploring.
