Adolescents and adults are vastly different in all areas of their lives including counseling. Adolescent brain development is progressing swiftly through the developmental stages that are critical to decision making, cognitive decision making, and partake in more risk-taking behaviors (Arias-Pujol, 2017). As a counselor it is crucial that all characteristics of the client are taken into consideration when developing a treatment plan to optimize client success (Arias-Pujol, 2017). Psychotherapy or ‘talk therapy’ has been shown to increase successful outcomes for adolescent clients attending group therapy. Adolescents also don’t have appropriate social cues and can react in ways that can be disruptive to other individuals participating in the group counseling session (Arias-Pujol, 2017). As a future group leader, I will utilize group therapy with adolescents because it can promote relationship skills, increase self-esteem, and even give a sense of community. In a group leading as the counselor, I would also communicate thoroughly with the legal guardians for the adolescents in question too, including the support network into the counseling process can optimize success.
