Silva-Medina 1 Physical Development Activities Ashley Silva-Medina The University of Arizona Global Campus PSY 104: Child and Adolescent Development Professor Harla Frank June 10, 2024
Silva-Medina 2 Do parents have full control over the rate at which their child develops? What is more important, the quantity of milestone a parent can help their child to develop or is it better to focus of developing quality skills within those milestones? Due to one reason or another not all children grow at the same rate, and that is okay! Each child is unique and will grow at their own unique pace. It’s better to focus on encourage their development rather than focus on comparing their underperformance to other children. There are many methods to providing stimulating developmental care to children, the best the provider can do is encourage and set the child up for success while teaching them the tips and tricks using methods that inspire and motivate such as age-appropriate activities to aid physical development. Infantcy, toddlerhood, and early childhood each have different growth milestone that require corresponding supportive activities that target the different social maturity of the individual age groups. Infants are described as being between the age of 0 months to 12 months of age. The rate at which infants develops is exponential and there is not a lot of time before infants become toddlers. So, to ensure infants are reaching their important milestones it is key to engage them in activities such as tummy time. Tummy time (or prone play) is when an infant is laid down on a surface face down and is most beneficial to development when used during the first 0-6 months of an infant’s life. The surface used can be a lap or the floor, preferably using a tummy time safe surface such as a mat. Since being on their tummy’s is such a new sensation and feeling for infants, it is best to start off tummy time in short intervals of only a few minutes or what the infant is able to tolerate. Tummy time is a skill that needs to be developed slowly overtime relying on repetition with high rewards or encouragement. As stated in a research article by Science Direct “ tummy-time (prone) for play is the mainstay of plagiocephaly prevention advice
Silva-Medina 3 to minimize development of plagiocephaly and to facilitate infant motor development, particularly head control” (Galea & Williams, 2023). Placing an infant in a prone position (a.k.a. a Superman pose) will help the infant to learn how to hold up their head by strengthening their neck muscles and aid in the prevention of them developing plagiocephaly head shape which is when an infant’s head skull is developing flatten. Squishy water tummy time mats as well as colorful mats can be used to make this activity more fun for the infant as their curiosity will be piqued. The caregiver can place jiggle toys or toys that make sounds just out of grasps from the infant to encourage them to direct their gaze towards the mysterious sound and as the infant becomes curiouser they will hopefully begin to reach out and attempt to grasp the toy—two other vital milestones. Between the ages of 1-3 years old, toddler’s milestones begin to differ from those of the infants. By this stage in maturity, toddlers are ready for more complex methods of playing. Education through play is the method that bests captures the attention span of toddlers. Toddlers love when things are new, fun, creative and the Virtual Lab School makes it a point to further express that in order “to develop their fine motor skills expose them to a variety of sensory experiences. They need interesting items they can shake, hold, drop, grasp, and mouth” ( Supporting Physical Development: Environments and Experiences | VLS , 2023 ). Therefore, the most age-appropriate activity to encourage physical motor development would be painting with Q-Tip’s. Toddlers could be placed in an art room with all sorts of art decorating the room as inspiration for their own art. The purpose the Q-Tip’s are since they are much thinner than paint brushes, Q-Tip’s will help toddlers develop a three-finger pinching grasp which will later be useful for when they are learning to write with a writing utensil—a developmental milestone.
