Brain Development 1. When does brain development begin? Brain development begins with the formation and closure of the neural tube, The earliest nervous tissue that looks like a fat earthworm stretched out along the entire back of the embryo. The neural tube forms from the neural plate, which begins forming just sixteen days after conception. By 27 days, the tube is fully closed and has begun its transformation into the brain and spinal cord of the embryo (ZERO TO THREE, 2023). 2. When is the brain fully developed? In some ways, never. Our brains are continually reshaping themselves to meet the demands of everyday life, even throughout adulthood. However, certain aspects of brain structure and function do level off during development. For example, the number of neurons peaks even before birth; some 100 billion are formed during just the first 5 months of gestation (Fraser, 2023). 3. What role do parents play in a baby’s brain development? The one form of stimulation that has been proven to make a difference is language: infants and children who are conversed with, read to, and otherwise engaged in lots of verbal interaction show somewhat more advanced linguistic skills than children who are not as verbally engaged by their caregivers. Parents are another important part of the developmental equation. Infants prefer human stimuli - your face, voice, touch, and even smell - over everything else (ZERO TO THREE, 2023a). 4. How do early experiences wire the brain? The most sensitive windows of brain development are known as critical periods. During these times, sensory stimulation, motor activity, and even emotions shape the brain as it grows, wires, and learns. The period shortly after birth is one such window. A baby’s early
life experiences – seeing parents’ faces, hearing their voices, and being held – provide important sensory information that guides its developing brain pathways (Galinato, n.d.). 5. How is the information provided related to our work with infants and toddlers? The information provided relates to our work with infants and toddlers because it helps us understand that child development is a protective factor and helps us recognize that the first early years of life are crucial. Being attentive, caring for their needs, and interacting with infants and toddlers shape the brain positively and healthily. 6. What are the most important influences on brain development after birth? Starting from birth, children develop brain connections through their everyday experiences. They’re built through positive interactions with their parents and caregivers and by using their senses to interact with the world. A young child’s daily experiences determine which brain connections develop and which will last for a lifetime. The amount and quality of care, stimulation and interaction they receive in their early years make all the difference (First Things First, 2023). 7. What roles does language and music play in brain development? Music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and mind work together. Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sound and meaning of words ( Children and Music: Benefits of Music in Child Development , n.d.). 8. What is the impact of technology in the brain? The role of technology in child development is a topic of increasing concern and interest, as technology use by children has become widespread in recent years. Technology, including smartphones, tablets, and computers, can impact children’s development in a variety of
