1 Managing Cultural Diversity Elizabeth Teasley February 16, 2024 POLS 5230 Public Management & Leadership 10.1 Video Case: “Managing Cultural Diversity” Instructor: Dr. Levy Gene Kohn is the chairman at Kohn Pedersen Fox an architect company in New York City, with international firms in London, Japan. In Japan, some cultural differences weren’t the norm for the Europeans and the United States with both Europeans and the United States having some similarities. Gene picked a diverse team from different ethnicities and genders. The project manager who was an African American was uncomfortable with both sides not cooperating and some discomfort with other team members, even though Gene could have changed up the team to make it more according to the Japanese he decided that he wasn't going to make the change and hett the team the same, he would just have to reach out the Japanese and be direct on how some people are feeling from the team and working together and respecting cultural differences is important.
2 Managing Cultural Diversity 1. What might Gene do to avoid the type of cultural misinterpretations that are mentioned at the end of Chapter 10? Making sure everyone has self-awareness when it comes to dealing with cultural diversity. Gene also needs to be aware of his cultural differences. Also make sure not to form quick judgments or attributions, oftentimes negative, about the motives, behaviors, and personalities of others. 2. What is the risk that Gene is taking in his approach? With the lack of understanding of one’s culture Gene is taking the risk of having a greater division within the team and organization and having a bigger problem that may affect others' personal cultural views. 3. In his actions, is Gene showing a global orientation, as described in Chapter 10? Why or why not? Gene is not showing a global orientation as a leader he showed positive attributes by being direct in addressing the problem and letting them know that everyone needs to work together and communicate respectfully regardless of how one sees the other they need to be able to have a cross country engagement it is not taking away their cultural differences but just understanding others to be able to come together. 4. If you were Gene, and you knew ahead of time that the Japanese client might not like working with African Americans, would you make sure to not include such individuals on the team--simply to accommodate the bias of a client?
