Define: What is a sovereign nation.
Sovereign nation is a self-governing body recognized having the authority over its own territory and ability to make decisions, as well with being able to pass laws without external interference. Some key take aways of a sovereign nation are that it has a defined territory with recognized boundaries. They also have its own governing institution that has control over the territory and populations. Another key point is that they are free from external control and have the right to determine its own political and social issues without an external source.

How many sovereign nations are recognized as members by the United Nations?
The United Nations recognizes 193 sovereign nations.

How many sovereign nations are recognized by the US State Department?
The US State Department recognizes 195 sovereign nations.

The number of sovereign nations recognize by the UN and US state Department are not the same
because UN recognizes 193 and the US recognizes 195.

Are the criteria used the same? If not, what are the criteria and how do they differ?
The criteria used can be overlap, but they are not the same. They differ because for the United Nation to recognize a sovereign nation they make sure the state has effective control over a territory and population, which means the state having the ability to govern and maintain the claimed territory. They also need to have international recognition by other states and the acceptance with the international community. On the other hand, the criteria for the United States
are effective control and international recognition as well, but they differ because the US needs to assess the stability and legitimacy of the body government. Also, the US considers their national interest when it comes to recognizing a sovereign nation. 6.
Why is it important for you to be aware of sovereign nations?
It’s important to be aware of the sovereign nations because it provides us with cultural and historical facts, provides us a global perspective, also provides comprehensive information, and gives us an understanding to when someone asks a question about international relations, politics, and other topics.
