1) Why did Osama Bin Laden declare war on the United States? What does he accuse the US of
doing and what events does he reference in his Fatwa? Please refer to the assigned primary
source reading.
-
In the 1990s, Osama bin Laden, the leader of the terrorist organization, al-Qaeda,
declared war on the United States. He had a number of reasons for doing so, which
included the American military presence in Saudi Arabia, American support for Israel,
American sanctions against Iraq, and American engagement in other crises around the
Muslim world. Overall, Bin Laden's declaration of war against the U.S. was based on his
belief that the U.S. was a threat to the Muslim world and that it needed to be confronted
and defeated in order to defend Islam and protect Muslim interests.
2) In the 1980s, Mikhail Gorbachev proposed reforms for the Soviet Union, which failed to
prevent the collapse of the Soviet bloc in Eastern Europe. What combination of events led to this
collapse? Please refer to the documentary "The Collapse of the Soviet Union" and your textbook
chapter 28 reading.
-
A number of factors which include economic, political, and social changes, led to the fall
of the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe. After the end of World War II, the Soviet Union
and the United States became involved in an economic and military competition. Due to
the high expense of maintaining a substantial military, the Soviet economy experienced
significant challenges and was unable to keep up with Western advancements in
technology. The fall of the Berlin Wall was an important event that signified the fall of
the Soviet Union, as stated in the textbook [the Berlin Wall] “was demolished, first by
groups of ordinary citizens and, later, by the East German government.”. This symbolized
unity and freedom.
3) In response to 9/11, US president George W Bush instituted the Bush doctrine and declared a
Global War on Terror.
What was the Bush Doctrine? Was it successful or not? And how would
you say the global war on terror is going? What victories and defeats in the war stand out to you
and why? Please refer to the lecture notes to answer this question.
-
The Bush Doctrine targeted either the countries that supported terrorist organizations as
well as the terrorists themselves in an attempt to stop future terrorist attacks. The doctrine
also pointed out the importance of strengthening freedom and democracy around the
world as a way of creating stability and peace. There is some controversy over the Bush
Doctrine's success, some believe that it led to expensive and pointless wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan, while others believe that it helped to stop additional terrorist attacks on the
US. Both sides are understandable, TSA is a prime example of an after effect of 9/11, it’s
a long process to go through but it has prevented another hijacking. Although there are
still terrorist attacks occurring, they’re not the same as 9/11 but still very fatal. The death
of Osama Bin Laden stood out the most to me mainly because of how long it took to find
him. Last week's class taught me that it took a decade to finally capture him, but his death
didn’t signify peace since other members of Al Qaeda are still loyal till this day.
