2 FEDERAL POLICY REVIEW Federal Policy Review Federal school policies can vary between a broad range of issues whether they are at the elementary level or at the higher education level. Policies can have a direct or an indirect effect on the classroom as well. Also, in rare situations, they can affect the student once they are removed from the classroom entirely in the event of graduation. Throughout our nation, there is a growing trend for our elected officials to cancel federal student loan debt that has accumulated (Biden & Cardona, 2022). As a promise that this current administration made during its campaign and tenure, they wanted to cancel all of the federal student loan debt as a response to the current economic state. Originally, the federal government was halting all payments of federal student loans to ensure that struggling families could provide their necessities during the troubling times. However, the legality of the student loan forgiveness has been in question regarding whether it is constitutional or not. While this is not an educational policy that has direct effect on the workings of the classroom, it does however have a direct effect on the impact of the students outside the classroom (Biden & Cardona, 2022). Critique of Message When I began to critique this message from our President and Secretary of Education, I had to leave any bias that I may or may not have towards our current administration. On occasion, it can be difficult to critique messages such as this one because of the complexities that accompany it. However, in this video, rather go into further detail about the happenings of the student loan forgiveness, President Joe Biden and Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona discuss the documentation to fill out to request student loan forgiveness. Another critique of this message
3 FEDERAL POLICY REVIEW that I have is that it backtracks on the promises of forgiving all student loan debt and transitions it to it depicting to be most student loan debt. Summary The federal government with partnership of the Department of Education created a process for students who have graduated college to apply for student loan debt relief. In the speech given by both President Biden and Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, they laid out requirements to fill out the application which include primarily your name and your social security number. The speech does not indicate whether or not this application process will lead to student debt being relieved due to ongoing legal issues within the courts based on the question of its constitutionality. Implications for Schools Student loans have become a necessary evil for students to endure so that they can pursue the next stage in their education journey. While there are other means of getting student loans through private lenders, schools offer the option to distribute loans to their students. If there is confirmed and approved forgiveness for federal student loans, higher education centers may have to eliminate their student loan departments. What this could mean is that there would be an increase of students getting federal loans which will eventually be forgiven. That would lead to a decrease in schools offering loans and an increase of tuiton.
