Physics 2/12 Lab 5 Prelab Questions 1. In this lab, you will measure magnetic field strength using a Vernier Magnetic Field Sensor (VMFS) – you can find details about the VMFS on Trunk. Just as we need to tare a triple beam balance before using it, we need to zero the magnetic field sensor before taking data. If you want to measure the magnetic field at the center of a coil due to only to a current I in the coil and not due to ambient magnetic fields, which of these following methods should you use? Explain your choice. a. Zero the sensor inside the magnetic shielding tube (where magnetic field is always 0), then measure at the center of the coil with current I . b. Zero the sensor at the center of the same coil without current, then measure at the center of the coil with current I . c. Zero the sensor away from the coil, then measure at the center of the coil with current I . 2. Starting from Equations (3) and (4) in the lab manual, derive an expression relating radius r , magnetic field B , potential difference ΔV and the charge to mass ratio e / m (but not speed v ). For a fixed value of B , how could you plot the relationship between ∆V and r so that the data points lie along a straight line? Once you have plotted your data this way, how will you determine a value for e / m ?
