PHY 101 Lab 9: Magnetism Activity 1 Properties of Electric Circuits 1. What happens to the compass needle when the circuit is completed? a. The needle points in the direction opposite of Earth’s magnetic field. 2. Describe the direction and movement of the compass needle when the circuit is completed. a. The needle rests in the direction opposite of the magnetic field of Earth; the needle shows deflection. Activity 2 Solenoid 3. Explain how the solenoid could be modified to pull the iron core down the cylinder more quickly. a. When the iron core is placed inside a solenoid, the magnetic field strength increases. Spring return modification could pull the iron core down the cylinder more quickly. 4. If the metal rod was replaced with a cylindrical permanent magnet, as in some power locks, how could you make the rod move in and then move out, to lock and unlock ? a. If a cylindrical magnet were used in place of the metal rod, then a method of changing the magnetic field around the magnet would be required. Implementing a switch in the circuit could achieve this. Having a switch in the circuit would disrupt the magnetic field and allow for the cylindrical magnet to return to its original position due to other forces in the system (in terms of making the magnet move out). Activity 3 Coiled Wire Electromagnet
5. Describe how to determine which end of the nail is north using the right-hand rule. a. Point your thumb on your right hand in the direction of the current. Once you do this, the magnetic field will be in the direction in which your right fingers curl. 6. Describe how to determine which end of the nail is north by using the magnetic compass. a. The needle on the compass that normally points towards the north pole of Earth will move towards the magnet’s south pole. So, the opposite direction of what the needle is facing would be north. 7. Describe how the electromagnet's strength was affected by removing the iron core and by removing half of the coils. a. The magnetic field strength will be reduced because the core material is no longer concentrating magnetic field lines. Therefore, the electromagnet will have a much lower magnetic permeability. 1 © 2016 Carolina Biological Supply Company
