This week’s discussion focused on electricity. The reading covered electric charge, electric force, the electric field, currents and even superconductors (Ostdiek et al., 2018, p.224). But what most fascinated me this week was when I read about the electrostatic precipitator. The electrostatic precipitator is an air-pollution control device which is dependent on negative ions and positively charged plates. As we learned in the reading, opposites really do attract in the field of electricity. As dirty air (flue gas) passes by negatively charged wires, the particles of air become negatively charged. In between the wires, are positively charged plates which attract the negatively charged dirty air and pull it to the plate. Our book gives us an example of a large refining factory and shows with and without use. It is quite alarming, and I had no idea how effective the electrostatic precipitators were, nor that they were used in that large of a capacity. For me I had a rather more common use item that more of us might relate to, the air purifier. Several years ago, a new Ionizer technology made its way to infomercials which boasted fan-less and filter-less air purifiers, similar to the one below (OION, 2022). They would statically charge the air and attract contaminants to large plates that you would remove and wipe clean; my brother even had one and loved it. While I wasn’t completely onboard, I did see the dirt that was clinging to the plates. These machines use similar electrostatic precipitators and do just that; charge the air with one ion and attract that particle with the opposite on the plate inside. It makes me start to believe in the new black light purifiers that are showing up everywhere, maybe there really is something to that as well.
