Approaches and methods of history, economics, psychology, philology, literary criticism, anthropology, sociology, were brought to life to show the tasks of determining history, origin, and functions that religion offered. 2. What are some of the key terms in Otto's theory of religion, and what do they mean? What is his overall theory of religion? The key term in otto’s theory of religion is that religion is not rational and non-emotional conceptions that form from experiences in life. Meaning religion is not something that we do or feel, it's something that everyday life concepts that morphed over time. 3. Pick your own example of a religious belief, person, and practice, and analyze it using Otto's theoretical ideas. Christianity because that is what I was raised into believing. That includes a preacher and Sundays , sometimes Wednesdays for bible study, otto does not believe in Christianity, he does not believe in it because he views religion as having a phenomenological content rather than having an internal belief in divine reality. 4. His theory was religion should be viewed and studied as a symbolic system where believers live their lives and interpret the world. 8. How, according to Durkheim, is social solidarity or unity achieved in modern societies? The shifts in social systems, politics, moral behavior and perceives things in a social light he studied how we the people perceive things in our daily lives .durkheim thought social solidarity or unity is achieved in a more so modern society because there is a mutual need in society.

He thought that sacred refers to anything that is a part of the supernatural world and that inspires respect, profane is anything considered part of of the ordinary world which is common and familiar. 10. What social role does the totem play? Totenism is the belief that people are descended from animals, plants, and other natural objects , the social role that totem plays is that it helps give a meaning to the symbol so that an individual can serve their symbol. 11. Why, according to Nye, do we need to take seriously the ways in which religion expresses itself at the popular level, as well as at the "elite" level? According to Nye, we need to take religion more serious than we have been because of its mental and social effects on society. The way religion is expressed in society determines the outcome of how society is already portrayed. 12. Power and culture are the foundation of society.popular culture can function as a mode of resistance to dominating culture because it has influential values on people within society.
