MCC Bioethics Short Quiz Two - Professor Quigley
Name: Gabj Peroco
1. What are two ways that a social contract (i.e. Distributive Justice slides) tries to create fairness for people at different socio-economic levels? A social contract tries to create fairness for people at different socio-economic levels by stating that (1) a just social contract is one that will protect someone regardless of what their social position is, and (2) a logical person would advocate for a social contract that assumes they occupy the worst possible social position. 2. The ethical theory of Consequentialism differs from other ethical theories because it does not consider which of these, bold all that apply.
(a)
The virtue of excellence
(c) the most valuable state of affairs
(b)
The most benefits over risks (d) the highest good will for duty
3. Why should we have legal statues to protect minors, please give an example of how a minor should have the consent for medical decisions over their parent’s decisions for them. This is a very tricky subject.
Parents should always think of what is best for their child, in some cases this isn’t the case. If a young girl
doesn’t want to have children and wants to have a hysterectomy, her parents should be able to say no to the procedure and save the girl from a lifetime of regret. If she still wants it in the future, then she should do it. However, minors should be able to make their own medical decisions. For example, a girl gets raped and wants to abort the baby, but she needs her parents consent to have the procedure. Her parents don’t want her to abort. She should be able to abort the baby without her parents consent. She never asked
to have a baby and certainly didn’t do anything deserving of the terrible thing that happened to her. How is act OR rule-consequentialism relevant to some adolescent decisions or rights in health care?
4. Please state one of Rawl’s principles in his social contract proposal. Please give an example of how that principle helps with modern health issues that require more distributive justice.
A just social contract is one that will protect someone regardless of what their social position is
Lack of health insurance for low socio-economic households. They can’t afford to pay the high rates that the health insurance companies impose. Therefore, they live without going to medical professionals. 5. Please describe from our readings one country that supports health care for undocumented immigrants, what does that country provide and how is the US different in its policies for health care for undocumented. The United States, Thailand and Norway are the three countries that support universal health care. All three are flawed in one way or another. Norway: helps immigrants in need of urgent immediate care; all other trips to the doctors is out of pocket and not covered by insurance. Has the least amount of immigrants. UHC is for the general population. Thailand: covers more than Norway as it has three main insurance schemes. It is a very comprehensive scheme. It doesn’t cover some high-cost treatments. Uninsured immigrants have access to healthcare services, but are required to cover all
expenses if they aren’t insured. US: provides the most support for undocumented and low-income residents. Only “qualified aliens” are eligible for healthcare programs, excluding undocumented immigrants. Hospitals are required to assist in emergency situations but the patients will pay out of pocket. 6. Michelle Bachman has stated emphatically that homosexuality is immoral, a Massachusetts judge has voiced her support for the moral acceptance of homosexuality. The acceptance of opposite ethical opinions is used to describe which moral theory in the Rachels text?
(a) Deontology (c) Care (b) Utilitarianism (d) Ethical Subjectivism
7. Bonus Question
