Topic 4 DQ 1 How did Brown v. Board of Education change public education? Has the promise of Brown v. Board of Education been realized? Support your position with reference to a current event. Remember to keep your post academic in nature and relevant to the question. Hi Class and Professor, Seventy years ago, education as they knew it changed for the better when the Brown vs. Board of Education case had a significant ruling that promised integrated and equitable schooling for all. The thought process was that it would desegregate schools, however, it took some time. “The Brown vs. Board of Education didn’t achieve school desegregation on its own, the ruling sparked civil rights movement in the United States.” (Rosales) Recently the Brown vs, Board of Education case is being debated. There are still numerous litigations that surround Brown vs. Board of Education and more recently there was litigation surrounding the admission policies and the use of race of Harvard and the University of North Carolina. There is currently a group of plaintiffs now who want to make a symbolic change to the Brown decision. The group is in South Carolina and asked the court to rename the historic case. They are asking that instead of Brown vs. Board of Education it should be known as Briggs v. Elliot, which was a case filed in 1950. (Walsh) In this case they are claiming that Briggs v. Elliot filed their case before Brown v. Board of Education. Currently there has been failure to close opportunity and achievement gaps for African American and Latino students at every level of education as well as offering the less access to the best teachers and most challenging courses. (Toppo) The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently released a report that showed that there are many schools that remain segregated by race and class, which includes high-poverty and high-minority schools. Although Brown v. Board of Education did end segregated schools it has not provided equal access and opportunities to all students with core classes and college preparatory courses. School diversity is at its highest level and most of the time the schools I have worked at don’t show any hate towards the diversity of students. Most students seem to be very good about it however we must not give up on continuing to integrate our schools and providing every race including Caucasian race with same opportunities across the board. There is a lot of work to be done across the board but also as individual school districts. References: Rosales, John. “Fulfilling the Promise of Brown v. DQ 2 In the assigned readings and videos, the Heritage Foundation and Peter Sagal seem at odds in their respective positions toward the 14 th Amendment and the evolution of equal protection. How do you reconcile equality versus equity in public education today? You must support your position with examples from case law, the U.S. Constitution, or other readings. Hi class and Professor, Many people question how you balance out Equality and Equity in public education. Both terms are equally important as students experiencing both are equally important. Equality in education means that each student receives the same resources and opportunities such as funding, quality of materials, facilities, and the same quality of teacher lead instruction. (Zoloth) This concept came from the U.S. Constitution’s 14 th Amendment which states that we are guaranteed equal protection under that law. (Constitution Annotated) An example of this type of case law is the famous Supreme Court case and landmark Brown v. Board of Education case because the court ruled public schools were unconstitutionally segregating people based on race. This is what promoted equality in the first place. Equity in education means that every student gets the opportunities and resources they need depending on their specific situation. (Zoloth) Another way to phrase this is we need to ensure that every student has access to the resources and all their educational opportunities which will help them thrive in their learning environment. This aligns with Peter Sagel who is arguing that the 14 th Amendment is more complex than we thought. So going back to finding a balance between both terms, one way to help balance everything out would be with implementing policies that aim to set all students up for success. An example of this would be the schools listed as Title 1 schools. As teachers we are given teach grant but we must work for a Title 1 school for 4-5 years. It’s kind of the same for Title I schools, and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act which provides financial assistance to these schools due to the high percentage of children from low income. This act helps to ensure that children are meeting all the state academic standards even if their family is in poverty. The 14th Amendment and the Brown v. Board of Education were the framework for educational changes,
but as I stated in the first DQ, we still have a lot of work to do, including balancing equity and equality in schools.
