Step #1: Choose one of the three following mediums to initially present your argumentative position or basic thesis. Choice A asks you to first compose a tweet, such as the Dalai Lama’s tweet found in Unit 11. The tweet should be related to your topic (gun violence, immigration, or #MeToo) and no longer than 280 characters. The tweet should creatively express your thesis. The republicans insist that lack of mental health care is the cause of mass shootings, yet they constantly vote against making it affordable and available to all. And veterans, who really need great care, like this man, are completely screwed. We need mental health care for all! https://twitter.com/RMGaustad/status/1658659131916701696?s=20 Republicans blame mental health issues for gun violence. So, where’s the money for care? Opinion | Republicans blame mental health issues for gun violence. So where’s the money for care? - The Washington Post I regard the argument as symbol of the distortion of guns and laws in the U.S. society. Republicans for insisting that lack of mental health care is the cause of mass shootings, while allegedly voting against making mental health care affordable and accessible. It highlights the plight of veterans in need of quality mental health care and advocates for mental health care for all. To deepen and expand upon the argument from the tweet, I bring an article which provides a more detailed exploration of the issue and presents specific examples. The article discusses this issue more broadly, arguing that despite Republicans, particularly Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, blaming gun violence on mental health issues, the state of Texas ranks last in access to mental health care. The article criticizes Texas' refusal to expand Medicaid and Abbott's decision to redirect funds away from mental health programs. Both the tweet and the article call attention to what they see as a contradiction in the Republican stance: attributing gun violence to mental health issues but failing to adequately support the necessary mental health care solutions. This inconsistency is a significant point in both arguments, suggesting a need for policy alignment and real action to address both mental health and gun violence. Step #2: Present your extended argument After you’ve creatively rendered your basic position in the medium of your choice (a tweet, dialogue, or images/charts), reconstruct your argument in one of the following ways: a. in standard form (P1, P2, etc., /C); b. as an argument map/diagram (see Unit 2.2 video). P1: Republicans argue that lack of mental health care is the cause of mass shootings.
P2: These same Republicans consistently vote against policies that make mental health care affordable and available to all. P3: Veterans, who are in significant need of mental health care, are not receiving the care they need. P4: Access to mental health care can potentially mitigate instances of gun violence. C: Therefore, we need mental health care to be available and affordable for all. Step #3: Evaluate your argument using the criteria best suited to it. a. If it's an inductive generalization or statistical syllogism, use the criteria of sample size, comprehensiveness, and randomness b. If it's a causal argument, decide if its premises support a correlation between the proposed cause and the proposed effect, or if its premises are sufficient, necessary, or merely contributory conditions for its conclusion c. If it's an analogical argument, determine if the comparative features are sufficiently similar and if there are enough similarities to justify the comparison d. if it’s a deduction, test for validity and the truth of the premise. The P1 directly states that there is a link between mental health care and mass shootings, suggesting a correlation. The fourth premise (P4) also supports this correlation by suggesting that access to mental health care could help reduce gun violence. C P1 P4 P3 P2

P2 and P3 discuss the actions of Republicans and the situation of veterans respectively, which doesn't directly support the correlation between lack of mental health care and gun violence, but they do provide context and additional considerations that contribute to the overall argument. I suggest the statement supports a correlation between the premises and conclusion. The premises do suggest a correlation between lack of mental health care and instances of gun violence, as well as a correlation between the actions of these Republicans and the continued lack of access to mental health care. Step#4 Critical reflection on NACE and course competencies Review the course and NACE skills (see page 1). Choose one skill from the course list and two from the NACE list that you feel will be most useful to you, and then describe how these skills will advance your career aspirations. From the course list, I'll choose: Skill: Construct and evaluate oral and written arguments emphasizing clarity and rationality. This skill is vital in any career that requires communication and persuasion. It allows individuals to clearly articulate their ideas and viewpoints, and to critically evaluate the arguments of others. From the NACE list, I'll choose: • Gather and analyze information from a diverse set of sources and individuals to fully understand a problem. This skill is essential for understanding complex issues and making informed decisions. It involves researching a topic from multiple angles, considering diverse viewpoints, and integrating this information to form a comprehensive understanding. • Effectively communicate actions and rationale, recognizing the diverse perspectives and lived experiences of stakeholders. In today's globalized and diverse world, this skill is increasingly important. It involves not just conveying information, but doing so in a way that is sensitive to and inclusive of diverse perspectives. These skills will advance career aspirations by enabling the individual to effectively research and analyze issues, construct clear and rational arguments, and communicate in an inclusive and effective manner. This will equip them to excel in roles that involve strategic decision-making, communication, and engagement with diverse stakeholders.
