The Use of Voice in Writing
The simple message about my case study that I wish to communicate is that the transition
to common core was difficult due to the apparent lack of flexibility in the common core standards when implemented with special education students.
Administration Audience
Today I would like to discuss the issues pertaining to the implementation of the common core standards with our special education students. While I generally understand the importance of creating a set of standards that are universal in education, I feel that we have unintentionally created a bias towards our learners with IeP’s or whom are in the process of being identified for special education services. The issue at hand is with the rigidity of the standards as they are written, and the standardized testing that evaluates student understanding of the standards. As an advocate for students with special needs I am asking that we look at and evaluate the curriculum and interventions being used with our special education students. By evaluating those two components we may be able to create a program that not only meets the specific needs and goals of the students but also how we can demonstrate their learning progress on the goals.
When speaking with administrators I believe that it is important to be specific and brief. Many administrators are not experienced with special education therefore it is my responsibility to discuss the problem and offer viable solutions. My language with this group of people is more formal but it is important to not be condescending to their apparent lack of knowledge about special education law and policies. Von Boxtel (2017), suggested that administrators felt the importance of professional development opportunities for special education teachers and the general education teachers to assist in the understanding of the common core standards and what

their use in the classroom setting will look like. As the special education professional it is important to recommend and support professional development oppportunities.
Colleague Audience
I would like to discuss how our curriculum and interventions are either meeting or not meeting the needs of our students. I have several reports that show the areas where our curriculum is providing the components we need to master the standards but there are some areas
that we need to target as well. As a team lets decide how to break up the work and let’s decide a framework to follow so
that when we meet in two days we have some interventions planned to support our general education teachers and students. I believe that the framework needs to identify the skill set required to master the standard as well as a list of the material from the curriculum that is being used in the general education classroom. Please evaluate the effectiveness and lets prepare supplemental activities that can be implemented in small groups. After wards we will reassess the mastery and redirect as needed.
Yopp, Ellis, Bonsangue, Duarte, & Meza, (2014) highlights the importance of working together as a team whenever possible. When working with colleagues I understand that their time
is valuable and stick to an agenda. I also feel that as the leader of the group it is important to delegate so that my colleagues feel valued and again it is so important not to be condescending. Using inclusive language and being collegial is important to developing strong teams.
Parental Audience
Our transition to using the common core standards has been interesting. We have come across some issues with making sure that students are learning and progressing in their studies. If

“Parent involvement has been identified as a key factor in student success” (Latunde, 2017). Parental understanding of student learning goals is important even for those parents who are not active participants in their students learning. I find that developing a relationship with the
parents is as important as my relationship with the students. I see myself as the professional who is not only teaching students but the parents as well. I have sat in on many meetings where the parents were spoken over by professionals using language that they had never heard before. Those meeting cans be intimidating for the parents and it is the responsibility of the educators to make sure that parents understand what the students are doing in school.
