Logical Fallacy Essay
Part I
A college student has failed a test. However, when looking at the test, there were many circumstances that lead to the failing score. The test was poorly written and confusing, and the professor assigned the test on a Monday. This student believed strongly that good professors want their students to pass tests and that good professors should work to help their students pass their tests. This student should receive a higher grade on the test because it was poorly written, aspects around the test were unmanageable, and the professor should grade accordingly.
A good professor should want to give a college student a test that is passable. When a college student, or any student, earns a passing score on a test, it reflects on the ability of the professor to educate. Furthermore, all tests that the college student takes from this point on should be passed as well. Throughout his life, the college student has been told that he is good at taking tests. When someone is considered a good test taker, they should never receive anything other than a good score. Given that the student is thought to be a good test taker, a revision of the scores needs to take place as soon as possible.
Professors also must take into consideration that tests can be poorly written. The student passionately believes that if the test questions were written more clearly, this grade would not currently be an issue. Poorly written tests need to be revised and reworded, and the grade given needs to be reconciled. It is almost impossible for a student to pass a confusing,

poorly written test. A good professor would recognize this, want to see the student succeed and revise the test score. Some professors need to take a hard look in the mirror when thinking about failing students on a test. He knows that when a second look is given, the test score should either be an A or a B. There is no other choice. As the internal look is being done, please
ask the question, “Are poorly worded questions still being given?” Of course, as the answer is thought about, one could not see that there is any other choice but to address the issue of poorly worded questions. One may think that they are professional, but one must also ponder that they are a part of the issue as well.
In addition to the test being poorly written, it was also given on a Monday. College students should never be given a test on a Monday. Afterall, college students have many other things to complete on a weekend rather than studying for a test. The professor could have considered this fact and not given the test on a Monday. Furthermore, no tests should ever be given on a Monday. College students should not be held responsible for work and studying that is required during the weekend.
Along with poorly written, confusing, and poorly timed tests, the student and other students believe the grading system is too harsh. The entire grading system needs to be examined to see how the curriculum is currently working. The student believes, like so many others, that professors need to take a step back and realize that they are the ones who are making it more difficult to pass these tests. The question must be asked if the student always gets passing scores on other tests, why should this test be any different? He is an exceptionally good student, and it is known that diligent students who pass should always pass. This time should be no different.
Does this professor not have a heart when thinking about how they have failed this student? The college student is bound to become very depressed over this surprisingly failed test. There is the possibility that he will no longer be able to leave his dorm room after this
Nevins 3
travesty of not receiving a passing score on his test. This can all be avoided by one swipe of the
professor’s pen to change the grade to a passing score.
Lastly, when this test was shown to other professors, the consensus was that the college
student did an excellent job on it. Other professors have the same amount of knowledge, and their opinions should be respected. In the least it allows for the idea that this test should be in fact reread and the grade should be revised due to the test being poorly written, certain aspects around the test were unmanageable and the professor should grade accordingly. When looking at the arguments provided, the grade must be changed. Each of his arguments show that there are extremely specific reasons that the score was not his fault and beyond his control.
Part II
Logical fallacies are not very logical when you are trying to present an argument that you
would like to win. Slippery Slope and Begging the Question seemed to be the easiest. Even though the slippery slope fallacy seems silly, it was an argument that I could see myself using. Especially because it puts the ownness towards someone else. Same with begging the question, it also takes the ownness off of me and asks the person that I would be arguing with to
prove their point. The hardest one was Post Hoc; it was a bit confusing to create a fallacy or argument from it. It would be one that I wouldn't even use by mistake within an argument. I think
in terms of arguing, I can present my facts to get the points across.
Yet, with this paper having to use logical fallacies, I felt that they weakened the validity of
my arguments. I would not want to base my argument skills off of this paper. This essay was difficult to write using fallacies. This leads me to believe that I don't argue with the use of fallacies and that I like to use facts to support what I believe in, not evidence that seems silly. I believe that going forward I will be able to identify logical fallacies more easily. This will allow me

to know if someone is arguing with me using fallacies and I will be able to identify and then dispute based on their use of a fallacy.
