2 Ethics in Massage Ethics in Massage My wife, CF, is a licensed massage therapist that has been practicing for over 7 years now. One of the ethical situations that she regularly must deal with in her practice is nudity. In the state of Arizona, it is illegal for a massage therapist to be in the room of a client while they are nude and uncovered. Part of the initial interview is to review the client’s medical status such as active pregnancy, open wounds, new tattoos, or recent surgery. They also gather what the client expects from their experience. CF also will take this time to explain her expectations of the client and experience. She will inform them that she will step outside and give the client a few minutes of privacy to undress to the client’s comfort level, to store their belongings in the designated area, and then lie under the sheets on the table. Often, she interacts with individuals from all over the world from many different cultures. Some of which do not find nudity socially inappropriate for the environment. These clients tend to start undressing before she is finished and can leave the room. This puts her at risk of losing her license and can causes her to confront the client explaining that it is state law and to please wait for her to leave. In this situation, a subjective relativist would say that whether it is morally right or wrong is based upon CFs personal morals and beliefs. If CF found it morally acceptable for public nudity, then the client undressing with her in the room is morally right. Where if CF found it morally wrong to be nude in public then it would be morally wrong for the client to undress in front of CF. The subjective relativist believes there is no true right or wrong within morality. That each individual interprets and decides their own right or wrong. A cultural relativist would say that while in their culture and society it is morally correct. It would be considered morally incorrect in our culture. They are participating in our society and
3 Ethics in Massage in our culture public nudity is morally wrong therefore they are wrong (Santa Clara University, n.d.). Rachels, S., & Rachels, J. (2019) explains that cultural relativism is to believe no culture is superior or inferior to one’s own culture, but that “when in Rome, do as roman’s do”. Implying that while participating in another society it is expected to respect and implement those cultures morals. CF in this situation asks the client to pause and stop undressing so she can finish explaining and leave the room. She will inform them that it is a legal requirement for her to leave the room. CF personally does not find nudity wrong but conforms to our society’s expectations of it being inappropriate. In this instance she is morally correct in reference to cultural relativism. But she would be subjectively wrong as she is going against her personal beliefs. In this situation there is not an objective moral truth. Being in the body’s natural state of nudity cannot be proven factually right or wrong. “ Objective morality is the idea that right and wrong exist factually, without any importance of opinion” (Cnc, 2022). While nudity is the natural state we are born in, clothing protects us from the environment in addition to the social parameters. Therefore, the argument for clothing and nudity would be relevant to the situation without a definitive yes or no.
