Introduction
Leaders take on many roles within an organization and it is important for them to know
how to be both leaders and followers and to be able to pull off both roles it is beneficial to
perform ethically. In this synthesis, I am going to explain what it means to lead ethically. I am
also going to attempt to summarize the importance of ethical leadership. Lastly, I will outline
how to model ethical behavior as a leader using the SPL model.
What is Leadership Ethics
When employees see their leaders acting unethically, it gives them the impression that
they can do so as well after all leaders should lead by example. A good ethical leader should
take advantage of the opportunity to inspire their staff to take the high road and do the right
thing and by reflecting on what kind of employe they’d like to be. Leaders should know that
their roles in an organization as individuals are formal and as individuals, they take on different
roles as professionals, citizens, parents, and volunteers. [ CITATION Annnd \l 1033 ]
Leaders within an organization have or have had the opportunity to experience both
ethical leadership and unethical leadership at some point in their professional careers.
Leadership styles depend on the type of leaders they have in top positions. It is obvious for the
future of any business to strive it is beneficial for the organization to employ leaders who are
ethical and focusing on delivering favorable results.
So, what is ethical leadership? Darby (2023) wrote that ethical leadership has to do with

exemplify strong moral principles by pointing out when a staff member as well as other staff
members are exhibiting wrongdoings.
The Importance of Ethical Leadership
Ethical leadership is essential to an organization as it inspires those around them to be
ethical as well. Leading ethically helps leaders set an example to their staff and it is also good
for their credibility and reputation. When a leader performs unethically it can damage their
personal and company brand. [ CITATION Giu21 \l 1033 ] Ethical leaders should be honest as it
makes them worthy of being trusted by those around them. Ethical leaders should also show
respect for others, it doesn’t matter what position they hold or their characteristics. Ethical
leaders should also show integrity in their words, values and actions. Transparency also plays a
big part in being an ethical leader through communication by accepting feedback and sharing
information no matter how insignificant you might think it is.
Ethical Behavior as a Leader Using the SPL Model
As an ethical leader within my organization, I plan on using the SPL Model to enhance
my critical thinking skills as well as contribute to the knowledge I’ve already gained within my
field. I will utilize it to strengthen my problem-solving abilities. I will also use my leadership
skills to widen the scope in leading, managing, and influencing my staff as well as embracing
my decision-making skills, strategic thinking, managing my team and being an ethical leader.
Conclusion
While conducting research for this paper I learned that an ethical leader looks at oneself
as a role model and by presenting themselves in a moral and ethical manner and inspiring their
