Ethics Principles
Beneficence and Nonmaleficence: This is has to do with avoiding situations that could
potentially put the client in a harmful situation.
Dr. Karry put Erica in a harmful situation because through him giving all the extra
attention she began to feel that the extra attention was hurting her more then being helpful.
Fidelity and Responsibility: This has to do with trusting other colleagues in the profession
and having certain standards that are followed within the profession
The ethics committee that Dr. Karry reported to questioned his mental stability
Integrity: This has to deal with honesty and being truthful
Dr.
Karry accused Erica of plagiarism and then admitted that he wrote the paper for her
Justice: This has to deal with fairness and honesty
It was not fair that Dr.
Karry wrote the paper for Erica and submitted it. Erica did not have to
submit that paper. It is not fair that the other students did not have that advantage
Respect for People’s Rights and Dignity: within this principle is the right to privacy and
confidentiality and being aware of the various cultural or gender differences that may arise
Ethical Standards
Resolving Ethical Issues: This involves issues such as reporting ethical violations, dealing
with ethics committees, conflicts that occur between ethics/laws and legal authority, and
improper complaints
Dr.
Karry reported Erica to the ethics committee for plagiarism.
Competence: This involves boundaries, how to handle emergency situations, and personal
problem conflicts
Dr Karry and Erica did not set any boundaries to determine what was too much and there
were boundaries that were crossed. Dr
Karry had his personal emotions involved which lead him
to reporting Erica
Human Relations: This involves harassment(sexual and other), multiple relationships, third
party services, informed consent, cooperation with other professionals, conflicts of interest
Erica began to feel uncomfortable with the extra attention and requested a transfer. Dr
Karry
said there was no romantic interactions between the two
Privacy and Confidentiality: this involves maintaining and discussing the limits of
confidentiality,and disclosures
Advertising and Other Public Statements: this involves not using false or deceiving
statements, media presentations, statements provided by other people, and media presentations
Record Keeping and Fees: this involves maintaining and disposing of records, withholding
records,fees and other payment arrangements

Education and Training: this involves coming up with education.training programs,
students giving personal information, and sexual relationships between students and
supervisors
Dr Kerry was supposed to be the supervisor and be a guide not do the work for them
Research and Publication: this involves getting approval from an institution, informed consent
for research, the care and use of animals in research, plagiarism, reporting research results
Assessment: this involves uses for assessments, informed consent for assessment, releasing the
data from assessments, and interpreting/understanding the results
Therapy: this involves informed consent for therapy with couples/families/groups,
interrupting/completely stopping therapy, sexual relationships with current or past clients or
relatives of those clients
Statement of Culture and Social Orientations
For this case if the student was an exchange student from Europe this case could have turned out
differently. If it were an exchange student I think Dr Karry would have taken it even further and
actually engage in a sexual relationship with the student. Being an exchange student they may
not fully understand and take their actions just as kindness and that is the normal thing that is
done. After the student ends the relationship she will report Dr Karry to the ethics committee and
his license may be taken.
