Position Paper Outline Notes
Issue: Should college education be available to all people for free in California ?
A brief explanation of the controversy: If college was free students would change their major, skip classes, and study less. There is also concern for students taking one or two classes at a time rather than multiple since they will have more time to graduate at a slower pace. Rather than meeting the expectation of working towards their degree requirements. Background information (if relevant): Between 2007 and 2010 jobs requiring college degrees grew by 187,000, while jobs requiring some college or an associate degree fell by 1.75 million, and jobs requiring a high school degree or less fell by 5.6 million.

Your conclusion: College education should be free to everyone.

Reason 2: Granting free college could increase graduation numbers. Potentially will help lessen the inequality gap of many students. Evidence (and types): research study and statistics

Reason 3: Economic and social benefits play a major role in having people get educated and allowing access to education can increase expectations for our complex society and our economy.

people not to attend. Debt is a stopping point for students to continue college education. There could also be a decline in private schools if college education was free. Citation(s): Josephson, Amelia. “The Pros and Cons of Free College.” SmartAsset

Rebuttal to the opposition’s arguments: While college can be a leading cause of student debt by giving free college education it can decrease that debt. Students will no longer need to worry about the debt of getting a college education.

Conclusion
(limitations to your conclusion, create new thoughts for the reader; possible
next steps, new ideas):
A free college education is a step toward a brighter future for all students who want to be able to achieve their future careers. Expanding access to education without having to live in debt would be a major change. Students will live to know that they have a better job due to having the luxury
of free college. People will be able to not only get better jobs but create new ones to help our economy. Expectations of having to finish within a certain time frame would be ideal in order to stop the delays in getting any degrees. The idea of being able to start college and being a first
generation graduate for most would be a great benefit to those who are of lower income. Students of low income would be able to graduate as first generation graduates and have the ability to open those new opportunities that were placed on hold.
