Reflection and Synthesis Report for WEEK 1 Name: Jordan Ingram Week #: 1 Instructions In the table provided below, you will complete your reflection and synthesis responses for this week. Be sure to complete each Response section. When referencing scripture or other materials, only include a brief or abbreviated summary along with the citation as these cannot be included in the required word count. When you have completed the document, save it to your computer and follow the instructions in your course to submit the assignment to your instructor. 1. Did you complete all the assigned reading for the week? [Yes ⃝ or No ⃝] Yes! 2. Explanation of Key Events and Scriptures Demonstrate your comprehension of fundamental truths of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ, and your ability to use the scriptures to teach them. Be sure to include specific scripture references, focusing especially on restoration scriptures (Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, Pearl of Great Price). Scenario: Imagine you have been asked by a family member or friend to share what you believe about the truths and events you studied this week. Share in your own words several insights as though you are really trying to teach someone. Include at least three references to support the truths you teach (you may reference them, but there is no need to quote them). Share your testimony as you would when teaching someone. Your response will be evaluated by the following criteria: 1. 200–300 words in length (please include your word count at the bottom of the section). 2. Include at least 3 references. Response: This week in class I learned about the apostasy which was the time after the Savior and his apostles died and when Heavenly Father took the priesthood away from the would be due to the corruption in the church. The apostasy can be summarized using the scripture Amos 8: 11-12, which is where the Lords says there will be a famine on the earth of his word and that man and search all over the world, but they will not be able to find it. I leaned that people could find themselves in a state of apostasy when they turn away from the church and its beliefs. People that often turn away from the church do so because of false truths they learn from the world, terms like “you only live once” are great example for false truths spouted from worldly beliefs. Because as a church we believe that we were gifted this life to experience mortality and to eventually work
to make it to our father again because we do believe well be able to live again and we’ll be held accountable for our actions. Moroni warned the people in Mormon 8:26-41 about the times of apostasy and how if they kept living with such emphasis placed on material or worldly things they would not be safe from the wickedness. As centuries passed the true teachings of the gospel where lost and only small fractions were still around. Luckily a young man Named Joseph Smith recognized this and prayed to the Lord asking for revelation and helped end the apostasy by restoring the priesthood and full truths of the gospel, Joseph Smith recounts the word of the Lord in D&C1:17-23. I would just like to say that I’m so thankful for Joseph Smith and his ability to discern the truth when faced with so many false churches. I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet, and that revelation is still being received by our prophet today in the church and I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ amen. Word Count:343 3. Synthesis: Personal Relevance and Application to the Real World There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences of living in a fallen world. The readings this week of ‘ The Need for a Restoration ’ as well as the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ have tremendous power to help people find answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and concern for them again. Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own: abortion abuse/bullying addiction depression divorce domestic violence energy/environmental issues violence gambling genocide homosexuality international terrorism materialism natural disasters pornography unemployment
poverty racial strife/hatred religious intolerance/persecution threats to religious liberty same-sex marriage suicide Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging with the truths you know. Write a response in at least 300-450 words and list your word count at the end of your response. The world problem/issue I chose this week is: Materialism Response: Materialism is probably one of the greatest evils out there. Materialism often leads to greed and envy and is very common way that Satan temps us. Nephi had a vison of this very problem in 1 Nephi 13:6- 9, where he sees the Devil at the head of his own church and that it is filled with things of all worldly values like golds and silvers, fine clothing, and harlots. I feel like in the present day many people my age are very much tempted by this “church” that Satan leads, and this is due to social media and capitalism that tells us over and over again that the only way to be happy in this life is to have more worldly possessions and if we don’t have that many how can we be happy. But that is untrue. We were gifted this life to experience mortality and all the good and bad it offers, and Heavenly Father promises up that if we are faithful to the gospel and his commandments that we will be blessed by things much greater and more valuable than material objects. If we are following the Lord’s church rather than Satan’s church we are offered eternal life in paradise, to be sealed to our families forever, repentance, blessing, the word of God and much more. Whereas those who follow Satan’s “church” or temptations they only get temporary happiness and sometimes not even that. I believe that God constantly warns us against Satan’s “church” and against things such as materialism by reminding us of the opportunities and blessing we have by following the true church and its leaders. If we avoid the materialism and instead place our focus on other things the lord encourages like serving other, doing temple work, or reading our scriptures we will be blessed with this far greater than the world and man has to offer us.
