Ethical Dilemma – Review Checklist Recommendation Approve X Return for Revision Please fill out each row of this worksheet. If you approve the essay for submission as is, provide evidence from the text in support of your recommendation. If you recommend revisions to the essay, provide evidence in support of your recommendation. Finally, write a summary of your recommendation below. Article Requirements Yes No Evidence From Text Clear Judgment Writer makes a strong, clear ethical judgment in response to an ethical dilemma. yes "…it can be determined that the most ethical choice in this situation is to tell your parents the truth about your plans, but to also take steps to mitigate their worry. This decision not only aligns with the virtue of honesty and compassion, but also promotes trust and communication in the relationship with your parents.” Ethical Framework Judgment is grounded in a clear ethical framework. yes “Virtue ethics is a moral theory that emphasizes the development of virtuous character traits and the pursuit of the "good life." According to virtue ethics, the most ethical decision is one that is made by someone with a virtuous character, who acts in accordance with their moral virtues and is guided by the concept of the ‘Golden Mean.’” Support for Judgment Ethics tests and substantive examples support the judgment. yes “Another way to confirm your judgment is by applying the ethics test of "The Categorical Imperative." This test states that one should always act in a way that they would be willing to make into a universal law. In this situation, it can be argued that if everyone always kept their loved ones in the dark about potentially dangerous situations, it would lead to a lack of trust and communication in relationships. Therefore, it is morally imperative to be honest with your parents about your plans.” Rationalizations Argument is free of all rationalizations. no “This can be done by providing them with information about the safety measures that are in place in Kyiv and the steps that your organization is taking to ensure your safety, as well as letting them know that you will be in regular contact with them during your detachment. Additionally, it is important to reassure them that you are taking the risks of the situation seriously and have thought through the decision carefully.” Rhetorical Context Writer recognizes the rhetorical context and effectively positions his/her appeal within that context. Yes “According to virtue ethics, it is important to be honest with your parents and not deceive them, as this undermines the trust they have in you. Additionally, the virtue of compassion is also important in this situation. Compassion is the ability to understand and empathize with the feelings of
others, and to act in a way that is kind and caring towards them. In this case, it is important to take into consideration the fact that your mother may experience stress, anxiety, and sleepless nights if she is unaware of your plans, and to act in a way that is compassionate towards her.” Style Clear, concise, confident style enhances communication. Yes “However, by utilizing the ethical framework of virtue ethics and applying the ethics test of the "Golden Mean," it can be determined that the most ethical choice in this situation is to tell your parents the truth about your plans, but to also take steps to mitigate their worry.” Editing Flawless to almost perfect; inconsequential mechanical or grammatical errors. Yes The Golden Mean is the idea that the best way to act morally is to find the middle ground between two extremes – in this case, the extremes being telling your parents the truth and not telling them at all.” Please provide your peer with a written summary of your feedback in a short paragraph. State the main strengths of the paper, and the main weaknesses that should be focused on for the revision: Hey Tukker, I thought your essay was put together really well. I do have some comments that don’t really fit into the boxes above. First, you use the ethical test of The Categorical Imperative, but you do not include it in your thesis, so that point of your argument, which I thought was the strongest point, was a surprise to me. When you use the Golden Mean test in your essay you aren’t using it as a test. You simply state possible situations that could follow this test. Before even using the test, you need to have a statement of what you think the person should do following your ethical framework, not the ethical test. Also, in your reasoning for the Golden Mean you state there should be a middle ground, but you only say things that would support being truthful. So, you need to go back and reorganize your argument points, include a clear statement of what you think the guy should do, and fix the Golden Mean test. I said that there was rationalization in the Golden Mean portion of the essay because you never said the reason why the protagonist should do what you think he should. You only state things that he could do. As far as organization is concerned, I believe that we should indent the first line of every new paragraph. Your grammar was really good in the essay!
