Case Analysis: Sycamore Pharmaceuticals Introduction In Sycamore Pharmaceuticals' case analysis, employee John Blake knew that he might take a risk by encouraging his medication without scientific study in order to support claims of its success. Sycamore Pharmaceuticals suppressed the knowledge of the medicine osteoporin, which is used for the treatment of Crohn's disease and lupus. Sycamore Pharmaceuticals has instructed its personnel not to disclose anything negative about the medicine to anyone. When the FDA representative wanted to talk to him about his knowledge of Osteoporin's scientific studies, without hesitation, John Blake was in a difficult position. John's worried that he would have failed to gain an important incentive and employment with Sycamore Pharmaceuticals if he hadn't told the truth. Whether or not John should be truthful to the FDA, the bravery he's shown, and why Dominguez and Blake have been so dishonest in the first place, will be covered in this article. I'd first advise John Blake to behave honestly with the FDA because honesty is always your best bet. I personally believe that dishonesties and secrets lead to more deception and secrets and the truth will be revealed whether we like it or not. It's obvious to me why John would consider lying to the Food and Drug Administration. However, we are considered to be less competent if our behavior produces good results and if we fail to achieve the expected results, Irwin, T., 2014 In the present case, the revelation of the truth would result in a bad outcome for the medicine and Sycamore Pharmaceuticals. He might lose his job and lose his incentive, if he's honest, because the medicine would be removed from the market. He could be in trouble with the FDA even after his medicine has been marketed knowing there is a risk of adverse reactions. If John were to be true, then the issue that would arise is more important than what might come out of it if he kept lying. John must consider the risk to those taking the 2
Case Analysis: Sycamore Pharmaceuticals medicine because they are not aware of the adverse effects, his best bet was to be honest. Patients were paying for a medicine that was not likely to be effective and could have serious side effects. It can be a satisfying thing to know that you've been honest, especially if it means saving someone's life. John's fear was that he'd lose his incentive and his position, but being dishonest as a leader is not the way to do it. It's in his hands and in his mind, because you're what you think you are, and your self-image determines your performance, (B.Tracy, 2014).Trust goes a long way, if he would be truthful his fellow employees would follow suit and also show admiration towards him. John has to be courageous in exposing the scientific studies' purpose and content. Not only is John in danger of losing his job or being demoted to a different position, he's putting the company and its associates at serious risk by doing so. To benefit John, he needs to find courage to be honest, he must find his try courage and specifically tell courage. In order to be courageous, one must not play it safe but act and do what is right and this will allow John the opportunity to acknowledge his mistakes and learn from them so that he's able to find a way forward with any remaining obstacles (Daft, R, 2014). Telling courage is a verbal way of being truthful, declaring beliefs, and point out wrong doings (Daft, R, 2014). John's going to take the responsibility for telling the truth to the FDA, and he’ll be brave enough to admit it. 3
