Christian Worldview DQ 1 and DQ 2
DQ1: After completing the topic readings, recall a time when you met someone with a different
worldview than yours (e.g., pantheism, theism, atheism), and you had a difficult time relating.
1.
What challenges did you have relating to that person?
2.
How might an understanding of the other's worldview have helped you in that situation?
This one is going to be a very personal response. September of last year I was pregnant with my now
nine-month daughter and received a stressful call from my mid-wife's office about the genetic blood test
we had done. During this call, my fiancé and I were told that our daughter tested high-risk for Trisomy 18
which is extremely deadly to babies. I had to have a special ultrasound done and a special test done to
rule out the blood test findings. Long story short we had the ultrasound done and nothing showed up
that showed concerns that the blood test was right, so I refused other testing due to the risk of doing
them. Throughout the entire pregnancy I was told our daughter was either fine or there was still a
chance because I refused the other test, and the ultrasound was not an accurate test to rule out
anything. Kimber was born February 7
th
, 2023, and she is heathy as a horse. While talking to my oldest
brother about all of this and what I went through while pregnant with her, I mentioned that I thank God
or whatever higher power is out there every day for her and prayed every day that the research I did
while pregnant about the genetic blood test I had done was wrong and I truly believe my prayers were
answered. This was when I found out my brother does not believe in God or any higher power, that he
believes that the test was simply wrong. He expressed to me that nothing could be answered when there
was nothing wrong to begin with and that it was just a coincidence. He called me naive. And gullible for
believing that there is. I was honestly shocked he believed this and could say such things to me. I did get
defensive because regardless of us not growing up religious I could not believe he felt this way. The
conversation ended in an argument, but that always happens with him and I when we do not agree on
something. Looking back after reading our topic reading this week, I can see that I should have heard
him out and tried to understand why he does not believe and maybe, why he said the things he said.
Also, I could have gotten him to hear me out and try to understand why I do.
DQ2: After viewing one of the films listed in the "Topic 1 Discussion Question Film Resource" from the
topic Resources, answer the following questions:
1.
What is the title of the movie you viewed for this DQ?
2.
What is one worldview depicted in the movie?
3.
Which characters held that worldview (e.g., pantheism, theism, atheism)?
Provide at least two quotes or scene descriptions from the movie to defend your points.
Theism was presented in “The Book of Eli” as well as faith. It is revealed at the end of the movie Eli is
carrying the last copy of King James Verson of the bible and Eli is blind. The movie is teaching watchers
that God will lead you, He will assist you, but you must have faith. “The Book of Eli” shows that the road
of God can be peaceful, but there can be several obstacles too. We start to guard the book and develop
blind faith and becoming blind followers, because we neglected its teachings or meaning to protect the
religion. When Eli said ‘Grace’ Solara heard him, later she and her mother repeated his words, they
believed without question, they accepted it without doubt, Eli stated he was being guided and aided by a
voice the held the idea, if one is strong in their faith, without question, they can face obstacles and they
will be rewarded in return, was aiding and guiding him. Eli said to protect the book, he forgot its lessons
even though he read it daily. The ending of the movie depicts a message of peace, with Tanah’s Hebrew
Bible, the Old Testament has one side, middle has the Bible, and Quran as the teachings. Eli told Solara “I
walk by faith, not by sight” and “I was carrying and reading it every day, I got so caught up protecting it, I
forgot to live by what I had learned from it” these two quotes render faith and the neglect of putting
what was read to practice.
