Week 7 Assignment: Creating Your Personal Philosophy of Change

Reacting to Change
Last month I decided to change our apartment and rent a bigger one because the current
apartment that my husband and I are living in is very small, I m studying, and he is working from
home. We really needed an extra room for studies and a small office. But it was financially
challenging for us to move from one bedroom to a two-bedroom apartment. The rent was almost
twice what we were paying before. It was a significant decision for me, and I was stressed
because it was also a big step for us financially, but we needed that extra room so I could study
better, and my husband worked in a calm and better environment. I shared my idea with my
husband, and he agreed with me but mentioned he could only pay 75% of the new rent. I created
a plan to work part-time and pursue my studies and decided to take our car a few days a week
and work as a delivery driver so I could help him financially and we could afford our new
apartment.
I understand that moving to a new apartment is not the only challenge. I needed to find time to
haul everything to a new apartment, and shifting to a new apartment cost also, plus I will be able
to earn enough money to cover the rent shortage. An article on Therapychanges.com motivated
me to accept the risk for a better future. If you're not failing, you probably need to try harder. "To
take on risks, one must consider failure an option, an opportunity to learn and grow – and a
necessary part of the process" (Perper, 1). I realize that if I don't take any risks in life and don't
accept the changes, I will be the same person and have the same life forever. When we accept a
change or take a risk, we are not confident about the outcome; it can go how we wanted, or there
are chances that it may not be in our favor, but still, we learn and experience and try again and
learn from our mistakes. The new apartment will be a better place for us, and we can better focus
on our studies and office, leading to better future opportunities.
Framing Change
Change can be seen as positive or negative; it depends on how we react and see it. When I first
moved to United Stated in 2018, it was a significant change for me; coming from a warzone
country to a developed country was hard for me to adjust myself. I barely understand and speak
the language. My husband found a job after a month, and I had no plan for the first six months

after moving to the USA. Everything was different, and I felt I could not do anything here.
However, I saw the change as an opportunity to grow; I started learning the language, and after
almost one and a half years, I got my driver's license and got a job. I learned that changes can be
scary when we first face them, but thinking positively about them and breaking them down into
different pieces makes it easier to deal with them. People from different countries who migrated
to the USA and have a successful careers now also motivated me; I used to say that they had a
similar situation to me when they first came here; if they can face the change and turn to positive
opportunities, I can also do it.
"Embracing change entails a change of mindset from negative to positive. Instead of regarding it
as something disruptive, think in terms of its advantages" (Roopleen, 1). It is essential to change
our mindset from negative to positive when facing a change; at first, I used to say that I could not
learn English and live here. Everything is different here, and it is hard for me to adjust myself,
but then I break it down into various steps, first learning the language and engaging with people
around me so it can open more paths for me. "Hence, whenever you want to bring about a
change in your life, do not thrust it upon yourself
all of a sudden
. Take it slowly, break it down
into steps, and plan to go one step at a time" (Roopleen, 2).
Managing Change
Change is challenging sometimes; it is not always easy to accept or deal with. Accepting the
change is a huge step that someone can take; it already happened; instead of finding a way to run
from it, its better to stand and face it and find a way to get the best outcome from it. Looking at a
significant change at once is scary for anyone, but the best way to deal with it is to break it down
into small pieces and deal with them one by one. I still remember when I first started the English
class, I was afraid every day that maybe the teacher would ask me something, and I would not be
able to answer it and would not look good in the class. I attended the class for a week with fear,
but then I decided to face it by reading my books carefully, focusing more on my studies, and
being prepared before class. Furthermore, after that, I overcame my fear and went to the class
confidently because I was prepared, and if the teacher asked me a question, I could answer,
maybe not in good English, but I was there to learn, and all the students. So seeing the change as
positive also motivated me to embrace it. There is a connection between change and fear; when

there is a change, we need to accept it first, overcome our fear, be prepared, and try to make it
positive, not run away from it.
The article at Tinybuddha.com website enabled me to look for any changes as new experiences
and learning opportunities. "You grow and learn new things every time something changes. You
discover new insights about different aspects of your life. You learn lessons even from changes
that did not lead you to where you wanted to be" (Ani Alexander, 1). Not all changes are in our
favor, but we can use our skills to deal with, learn and gain experience from them. Moreover, I
have learned that fear of change makes it challenging to face it; being prepared and breaking it
down will make it easier.
