Love is an emotion studied extensively by various scientists and philosophers. In
simple terms, love is a feeling of affection towards another person. It includes a blend of

objectivity and subjectivity for the mutual benefit of the persons involved. In “The Nature
of Love,” Singer discusses the two philosophies of love, appraisal and bestowal (Singer,
2009). He defines appraisal as assessing the value of an object of love or affirming the
goodness of that object. Bestowal refers to giving oneself to someone you love. I agree
with Singer’s argument that stresses the significance of the two models of love and the
need to combine them to enhance our understanding of love. Love is a two-way street and
should be reciprocated between the giver and the recipient. Singer's perspective suggests
that love is viewed as a dynamic process of recognition and value creation. I agree that
love mixes appraisal, which is a cognitive aspect applied when one judges the qualities of
the object of their love, and bestowal, which is a conative feature, demonstrated when
one's behavior is based on those evaluations; such as, caring, giving, and displaying
affection (Moore, 2019). Notably, Singer’s theory of love is supported by several
psychologists and philosophers, including Allan de Botton, who contend that appraisal
and bestowal must be combined for love to exist. Singer argues that the two are not
mutually exclusive since appraisal creates a basis for love, while bestowal enriches it.
Appraisal gives a reason to love because one cannot love someone, they don't consider to
have any valuable properties. Accepting them allows us to share ourselves with them and
show them love. Hence, a combination of appraisal and bestowal is mandatory for a
fulfilling and lasting love (Moore, 2018). Appraisal creates a basis to ensure love is
founded on reality and reason; bestowal ensures that love is warm and generous.
