Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: How might your thoughts, feelings, and attitudes in your interactions with young children hinder or aid your objectivity? What might you do to mitigate any bias when conducting assessments in the early childhood setting? Review the College’s Conceptual Framework . How does this topic link to the College’s Conceptual Framework and the framework’s philosophical relationship to effective teacher preparation? Good morning, Bias can arise from preconceived notions, stereotypes, or personal experiences that influence our perceptions and judgments. Biases stem from our upbringing. Every interaction and every experience we have had has shaped who we are. To some degree, our biases influence our beliefs and behaviors, they sway our attitudes, and they affect our personalities. Because our biases are so ingrained into who we are, it would be unrealistic to simply say “ignore your bias.” Two example strategies for mitigating stereotype threat include using positive imagery like asking students to think of a time that they've done well in the topic being tested, and addressing stereotype threats directly like warning students the stereotypes exist, dispelling myths, and discussing these myths. For example, several studies have confirmed that merely mentioning that a stereotype exists lowers students’ grades compared to a control group who did not have the stereotype brought up prior to a test (eg., Steele & Aronson, 1995; Spencer, Steele & Quinn, 1999). The framework this ties into is valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Everyone deserves the right to be treated equally and no judgement. https://pressbooks.nscc.ca/ece-observation/chapter/recognizing-your-biases/
