Annotated Bibliography Karla Del-Moral Chamberlain University Professor Coleman NR501NP Week Five Assignment August 13, 2023 Health Belief Model Tsai, Hu, Y.-J., Chen, C.-Y., Tseng, C.-C., Yeh, G.-L., & Cheng, J.-F. (2021). Using the health belief model to explore nursing students’ relationships between COVID-19 knowledge, health beliefs, cues to action, self-efficacy, and behavioral intention: A cross-sectional survey study. Medicine (Baltimore), 100(11), e25210–e25210. https://doi.org/10.1097/MD.0000000000025210 Since the occurrence of the corona virus, it has been discovered that it has a very high human to human transmission that has very severe physical, psychological, emotional and social trauma stemming from severe to fatal. The purpose of the study is to educate and equip nursing students in Taiwan with about Covid-19, its susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers and behavioral intention to prevent the spread of this communicable disease that changed our world by using the health belief model. 361 nursing students participated in this cross-sectional survey using quantitative analysis. The findings showed that the nursing students had the following mean scores on knowledge of “COVID-19 9.43 [standard deviation (SD)1.19], perceived susceptibility Rev. 09/25/2022 NR501NP
19.41 (SD2.68), perceived severity 20.31 (SD 4.09), perceived benefits 26.52 (SD 4.08), perceived barriers 15.17 (SD5.88), cues to action 3.30 (SD1.70), self-efficacy 17.68 (SD2.83), and behavioral intention 18.46 (SD2.33)” (Tsai et. al., 2021, p.1) The framework of this study was to survey the demographics of nursing students; school system, gender, health, age, religion, diet, movement and COVID-19 information and the relationship between perceived susceptibility, severity, benefits and barriers (Tsai et. al., 2021). The study concluded that nurse educators can increase nursing students’ knowledge about COVID-19 as effective strategies to help prevent the spread of corona virus. The discussion is important for a nurse practitioner because the more people are informed and given the tools to help prevent the spread of an infection the better it can be contained. Transtheoretical Model of Behavioral Change Romain, A. J., Horwath, C., & Bernard, P. (2018). Prediction of physical activity level using processes of change from the transtheoretical model: experiential, behavioral, or an interaction effect. American Journal of Health Promotion, 32(1), 16-23. The purpose of this study was to compare predicted physical activity by experimental or behavioral processes of change or an interaction between both using a cross sectional study (Romain et. al., 2018). 244 women and 150 men participated completed the Process of Change, Stage of Change Questionnaire and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire to evaluate Rev. 09/25/2022 NR501NP
physical activity levels. It was concluded that behavioral processes (thoughts and perception) are most prominent in physical activity. This article is important for nurse practitioners when setting up a discharge plans or implementing physical activity for their patients. We often talk about a holistic approach towards patient-centered care and physical activity is just one of the many elements we can encourage our patients to achieve a healthier lifestyle change. The transtheoretical model process of change for physical activity will help us emphasize and help guide not only physical by behavioral change. Social Cognitive Theory Koo, Poh, B. K., & Ruzita, A. T. (2019). GReat-Child Trial TM based on social cognitive theory improved knowledge, attitudes and practices toward whole grains among Malaysian overweight and obese children. BMC Public Health , 19 (1), 1574– 1574. https://doi.org/10.1186/s12889-019-7888-5 Studies have reported that an increase in whole grain in diet during the early age has the potential to increase lifelong health and wellness. In this study among obese and overweight children in Malaysia they use the great child trial which consists of a 12-week quasi experimental study with the six month follow up to evaluate its feasibility and to evaluate the changes in knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of whole grain consumption. A total of 63 children ages 9 to Rev. 09/25/2022 NR501NP

11 from two schools in Kuali Lumpar with similar backgrounds and overweight or obese were used for the study. It was concluded that the intervention had a positive impact on children's KAP on whole grains thus the program would be a good implementation in their schools to assist in the management and prevention of childhood obesity. This study is important for the nurse practitioner as we encounter a lot of overweight patients of all ages, this study demonstrates an intervention that incorporates whole grain into their diet and can help improve their KAP. This study is also important because it demonstrated that the availability of whole grain foods in the schools or an important aspect of the children's consumption. More availability equals more consumption. It is important for the nurse practitioner to always talk about diet and exercise with their patients as those are modifiable risk factors that can help aid in the prevention of disease. Family Systems Theory Jakimowicz, Perry, L., & Lewis, J. (2021). Bowen Family Systems Theory: Mapping a framework to support critical care nurses’ well being and care quality. Nursing Philosophy, 22(2), e12320–n/a. https://doi.org/10.1111/nup.12320 The purpose and goals of nursing in the intensive care unit is to think quickly to sustain life by using their skills, experience and knowledge. being linked to anxiety due to the balancing of biomedical interventions and compassionate patient centered care. “The aim of this paper is to discuss the application of Bowen Family Systems Theory to intensive care nursing, mapping a framework to support critical care nurses’ well-being and, consequently, the quality of care they provide” (Jakimowicz, Perry & Lewis, 2021, p.1). The Bowen Family Systems theory focuses on patterns within a family aimed to lower anxiety and increase collaborative work. This article concluded that the use of BFST for nurses in the ICU can assist in lowering anxiety, aid in nurse retention in the workplace, and assist in patient centered care. This in helpful for a nurse practitioner because anxiety can be a very prevalent experience in the workplace, especially new nurse practitioners. There are endless reasons to be anxious such as, being new to the job, writing orders, rapid rate of change, understanding and development of new technologies just to name a few. Implementing the Family Systems Theory in practice is vital in the role as a NP because having the support of the relationships at workplace through health barriers will be beneficial to the nurse and ultimately the patient. Family Assessment and Intervention Model Bushuven, Niebel, I., Huber, J., & Diesener, P. (2022). Emotional and Psychological Effects of Dysphagia: Validation of the Jugendwerk Dysphagia Emotion and Family Assessment (JDEFA). Dysphagia, 37(2), 375–391. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00455-021-10289-1 Rev. 09/25/2022 NR501NP
Patients that suffer from dysphagia which is a swallowing disorder can suffer from emotional effects such as anger, loss, anxiety, frustration and sadness. In this article a 55-item questionnaire based on the Atlas of emotion and the Calgary Family Intervention Model was given to 160 participants online, 49 of them were health care workers patients and family members. The qualitative analysis revealed 30 themes anger, enjoyment, sadness anxiety, disgust, shame and punishment. In conclusion this testing tool for swallowing disorders and concerns of emotional aspects and family functioning was valid and reliable. As a future nurse practitioner tools like these are important and reliable for us to use as we will most likely encounter patients with strokes and their families. It also helps us in further investigation of family dynamics with the patients as they may encounter emotional reactions. As mentioned before nurse practitioners can use a holistic understanding of dysphagia towards patient centered care. It is important to look at the entirety of the pictures to help our patients in their journey that may be experiencing sadness and anger due to the swallowing disorders. Rev. 09/25/2022 NR501NP
