[Type here] Kantian Ethics Module 6 Discussion Kantian ethics refers to a deontological ethical theory developed by German philosopher Immanuel Kant. Deon meaning ‘duty’ (Manias and Monroe 2020, pg. 67) Kantian ethics bases morality on right or wrong. Self- derived, universal, moral duties determined through reason and intuition. Per Immanuel Kant his concept was based off the concepts of duty and goodwill (Manias and Monroe 2020, pg. 67). It was organized through the notion of categorial imperative which is a universal ethical principle that one should always respect others and act in a way and follow rules that could be used by everyone. Everyone is self-derived or autonomous meaning self-rule or self-law. People are independent and can think for themselves. Even though people may not always do the right thing, they could do so (Manias and Monroe 2020. Pg. 67/ pg.15). The right thing to do is through the categorial imperative using universality. Universality is to act on a principle (maxim) that at the same time is willed to be a universal law. Kant is saying in this case, to act on something that is going to apply to everyone. (Manias and Monroe 2020. Pg. 67/ pg. 16). - 191 words Identification What should Tom do about the oversight of the managing engineers, which if not corrected, can harm the environment? Options 1. Tom could talk to the managing engineers and let them know what he found can harm the environment. 2. Tom could Not tell anyone and let it go. 3. Tom could go to the EPA directly and talk to them about the situation 4. Tom could revise the plans himself making the necessary corrections. Apply Categorical Imperative/Universality Apply Resect -
[Type here] 1. Tom could talk to the managing engineers letting them know what he found could harm the environment. Is Tom exploiting anyone? No. 2. Tom could not tell anyone and let it go. Is Tom exploiting anyone? Yes, he is. No one would know about what had happened and could eventually cause harm to many people and the animals 3. Tom could go to the EPA directly and talk to them about the situation. Is Tom exploiting someone. Yes, he is. The managing engineers and Mr. Morie probably will both be reprimanded for letting this happen and for doing nothing to try and fix it. 4. Tom could revise the plans himself making the necessary corrections. Is Tom exploiting someone. Yes, he is. Even though the problem is fixed, He is not telling others about the mistake that he found which others could learn from and not make the same mistake. He could be doing it to get rewarded. Situations would also get overlooked by others and end up being harmful towards the environment and other people. Conclusion – If Tom were a Kantian, he could act rationally. He could analyze and come up with his best option that is going to lead to benefiting the most people or things. He would conclude that talking to his managing engineers letting them know what he found can be harmful by figuring out that this option is the most beneficial and going to cause the most happiness than any of his other options. Through universality he can make this decision because it is a rule that everyone should follow especially by informing of something hazardous in the workplace that can cause a lot of harm to others. In this case other decisions would affect not only employees but also the environment and kill a lot of animals. People could lose their jobs and be reprimanded if he were to choose another decision. He would be respectful toward others’ rights and humanity and tell the truth of what he saw was wrong. He isn’t using anyone to a means to benefit himself. -170 words
