Arkangel Worksheet
1)
List the duties parents have in regards to raising a child?
They are responsible for making sure their child is safe, healthy, and happy. They are also
responsible for raising their child to be a good person and a contributing member of
society. They are also responsible for preparing their child for the real world
and not keeping them in a bubble
.
2)
Thinking about the parental duties that you listed above, and the Black Mirror episode
Arkangel, explain which duties were in conflict with one another?
For this episode, preparing the child for the real world and keeping the child safe were in
conflict with each other. Marie wanted to keep her child safe because of the traumatic
childhood incident, but did not think about the consequences such hovering would have on
her Childs development. Marie was overbearing to keep Sara safe. While Sara is kept safe,
she is never prepared for the real world. Because of this, as soon as Sara gets a taste of the
real world she runs away, and Marie is no longer able to guarantee her safety
.
3)
Using deontology as your framework, construct an argument for whether it is right or
wrong for a parent to monitor their child’s behavior using an intrusive technology? You
will be thinking which duties/obligations are in conflict, and arguing for why one duty
supersedes another. You may want to think about Life360 app or other monitoring
methods for a real-world version of the Arkangel.*
Using deontology, I believe using intrusive technology could be justified. Given deontology
values inherent right or wrongness, wanting to keep a child safe is inherently right. Despite
the potential drawbacks of this technology, it is hard to argue safety is an inherent wrong
.
4)
Using utilitarianism as your framework, construct an argument for whether the use of
child monitoring technology is right or wrong. Think about the consequences of using
Life360 for both the parent and child. Do the good consequences outweigh the bad
consequences?*
Using utilitarianism, I believe this intrusive technology cannot be justified. While the child
is being kept safe, they are likely to be upset with the situation. From personal experience
from friends, they are often unhappy with how overbearing their parents are. Because of
this, the number of utils generated from this decision is far lower than not using the system
at all. Thankfully my family did not use Life360 and allowed my brother and I to make our
own decisions, if they were dumb decisions, we learned the hard way. We turned out just
fine and I believe using Life360 is a great way to build distrust in the household
.
*
For questions 3 and 4, do a little research on the effects of using Life360, plus your own
experiences if your family has used Life360 or other ways to monitor you. Include your
references at the end of the assignment
