1 Professional Teaching Statement: My Philosophy on Physical Education, Exercise Science, and Sport Though I have no true experience as a physical education teacher, I believe my background in sports plays a valuable role in helping me establish a philosophy that I can teach my students for years to come. I believe physical education is meant to develop not just a student’s physical fitness but also their social skills and emotional well-being. My goal as an educator is to have a positive influence on the young people in my classroom while also providing them with a safe space to effectively learn how to live a healthy lifestyle. As a physical education teacher, my main priority will be to provide my students with an understanding of the relationship between physical education and mental health in a way that will assist them with leading and maintaining a healthy lifestyle for years to come. I know that every student will present their own individual challenges in how I’m able to help or connect with them as a teacher, so my approach may vary depending on the child, but the end goal of being healthy mentally and physically will always remain the same. My first goal would be to help my students develop self-confidence. I want them to be confident in who they are and encourage them to take on challenges not just in a classroom, but also in life. As a high school student, I was fortunate enough to play for a head football coach who would regularly state how “confidence leads to success” and that “failure isn’t something to be ashamed of.” Another statement he would repeat that still sticks with me is, “success is failure in progress.” I still live by these words, and like my former coach, I will provide my students with a learning environment that
2 requires them to perform physically and mentally but also teach them to confidently believe in themselves while not being scared to fail. I will set realistic goals and ask my students to work towards accomplishing these goals. These goals are more than a physical metric that should be met, it’s also about the challenging journey they will go through mentally that will develop them as people. Every student will learn that all the tasks we perform require a process and that these processes are what help us in succeeding at reaching our goals and advancing us in our growth as people. My approach to physical education is more than just being physically active. I truly care about my student’s physical health, but it is just as important to understand how our physical well-being relates to our mental and emotional state as well. While it is incredibly important for students to live an active and healthy lifestyle, it is even more important for them to understand the value of commitment. Understanding commitment and incorporating it into their lives will not only help them develop healthy habits for physical benefits, but also for mental benefits. As their teacher, I will teach my students about how they can commit to changes in their lives and why they should commit to such changes. A healthy lifestyle is not easy to maintain, so it goes without saying that it requires us to put in effort day in and day out. I will push my students to understand that being able to maintain a healthy lifestyle requires students to constantly be aware of the food choices and physical lifestyle choices they make. I will ensure that my students understand that every time they are making a conscious decision to eat better or go exercise instead of playing video games on the couch, they are following through with the commitments they made to themselves. This
3 will help students understand that every time they follow through with a commitment, they have made to themselves, they are solidifying a mentality in which they are building self-worth. As a result, this largely contributes to my original goal of helping students develop self-confidence in my class. In conclusion, I believe that becoming a physical education teacher, will allow me to practice and preach a philosophy that could benefit students for many years, on and off the field. Physical education isn’t just about doing exercises when the teacher asks you to do them, it’s more than that. It’s about understanding the importance of our lives and how much control we truly have over leading and maintaining a successful, happy, and healthy lifestyle, regardless of our age.
