Jojo Oshinowo One of the biggest event planning fails ever was when La La Land was wrongly announced as Best Picture during the 89th Oscars when the real winner was actually Moonlight. The question here is why wasn't protocol followed and why was this mistake made ? The way in which this incident happened could easily be interpreted as a harmless mistake given that circumstance. On stage the La La Land producers were approached by a man wearing a headset and holding an envelope. Horowitz clarified: “I’m sorry, there’s a mistake. ‘Moonlight’, you guys won best picture.” For one of the most well known award ceremonies in the world, I would not have expected such an avoidable mistake to occur. The way in which this mistake was handled was very straightforward, however because the mistake was very public and out in the open seen as La La Land was already announced as the winners, the only way to have corrected this mistake was to also announce and or correct the mistake publicly. This may have not been the most polite way but it was definitely straightforward and clear. In order for such mistakes to have been avoided, a thorough revision of the award winner documented before the Award ceremony should have taken place incase of errors. Before announcing any winner, the envelope should always be confirmed and labeled according to the award categories. Overall, the way in which this mistake was handled was fair and understandable as the mistake was communicated to the attendees in a very straightforward manner. However, such public mistake should always be avoided because you have therefore now put an unwanted image of the organization in the public eye.
