Describe in detail situations in which referring your client to a different counselor and/or agency should be considered. If referral is not an option, what ethical alternatives could you identify to continue to work with this client? Include references to the ACA or ASCA Code of Ethics to support your response.   In addition, reflect on GCU’s Integration of Faith and Work statement, “to serve others in ways that promote human flourishing” when considering your response.   As Grand Canyon University’s Integration of Faith and Work (n.d.) states we are to “Serve others in ways that promote human flourishing.” As counselors we have the duty to provide the best care and treatment possible for our clients; sometimes that means having to refer them to other counselors or programs. The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics states that a client should never be referred to another counselor because their values and opinions are different from the current clinician (ACA, 2014, A.11.b.). The first example of referral is when you have a client that you are treating for depression, but they mention they have relapsed and are currently using heroine. Even though we might want to help them with this dependency it would be unethical and could harm the client. This is when a referral should be made to a specialist like a drug and alcohol counselor. In addition to the referral, the counselor should make the process as stress free for the client and leave communication open with the new clinician (ACA, 2014, A.11. d., C.2.a.). Secondly a counselor should never treat someone who they have had a sexual relationship with or their family. Also, you should not have current client’s family members as a client. These individuals should be referred to another counselor (ACA, 2014, A.5.c.). If your location is a small town with limited resources and clinicians, treating family members as individuals might be the only option. When this happens, the counselor should remain neutral and put aside any bias they have from other client sessions. We are in the profession of helping and knowing when to refer a client shows competency as a counselor. References American Counseling Association.
