Assignment 1: Dirty Hands and Public vs Private Morality Please reference the instructions in the Assignment 1 description on LEARN as well as the rubric while completing this assignment. Complete Part 1: Simulation in LEARN before completing Part 2. Part 2: Reflecting on the simulation (400 to 600 words) Reflecting on content from Units 01 and 02 and your experience in the simulation, respond to one (1) of the two (2) options below using the DEAL model of reflection. Highlight or bold your selected option. 1. Discuss and reflect on how Selena faced a choice that involved dirty hands. 2. Discuss and reflect on the struggle Selena faced when it came to choosing between her public and private morality. When writing your reflective response answer some of the following questions to help guide your thinking: 1. Describe , in your own words, a specific scenario from the simulation where Selena faced a choice that aligns with the concept of dirty hands or public vs private morality. What options were available in this choice? What was the outcome of your decision? Selena was asked by Giselle, her supervisor, to participate in a research project that involves inducing stress on animals to study methods on coping with stress. Selena could either participate in the study or decide to withdraw from it. The study has the potential to help a lot of people and make significant advancements in her field of study, but it would also compromise her personal morals as she advocates for animal rights and views this to be unethical according to her morals. This is a concept of dirty hands as either choice would cause her to act ethically at something and unethical at another. I chose not to go ahead with the animal testing because if I were in Selena’s shoes, I would prioritize my personal morals and ethics if I had the option to, which there was in this case. 2. Examine Selena’s choice from the perspective of the course content, which should be clearly referenced. Did your choice have a successful outcome? Would you change anything about your decision? How did this choice impact your understanding of the concepts of discussed in Unit 01 and Unit 02? I believe that my choice did have a successful outcome as I did not have to compromise my own morals and values, even though I missed out on a good opportunity to help many people.
I think I would not change my decision as there would be many more opportunities in future for Selena to help people and make advancements in her field of study while keeping her personal morals and ethical values intact. This choice helped me understand that sometimes, we would face such ethical dilemmas where we would have to make sacrifices on at least one end regardless of the choice we make. This is what we discussed in unit 01 through ‘dirty hands’. This also ties in with the concept of ‘public vs private morality’ discussed in unit 02 as Selena has personal morals regarding animal testing, and has the choice to decide if she wants to let these values affect her decisions in the workplace. 3. Articulate your learning by summarizing what you learned from this experience. For example, what have you learned about your personal morality? Additionally, what factors might you consider when confronted with an ethical decision involving the concepts discussed in Unit 01 and Unit 02? What can you do to ensure you feel more prepared to make such a decision? I learned that personal morality guides an individual in their personal affairs, both in public and private facets of our lives, as seen in Selena’s case. We have to choose when it is alright for our personal morals to impact the decisions we make at work and when it’s not. When confronted with such ethical dilemmas, I would consider my personal morals and values and what morals and values is going to be compromised if I choose to do something. I believe that being aware of these concepts and decision-making models would make me feel more prepared to make a decision. Part 3: Reflecting on a situation or experience (400 to 600 words) Reflecting on content from Units 01 and 02 and your personal experience, respond to one (1) of the four (4) options below using the DEAL model of reflection. Highlight or bold your selected option. 1. Reflect on a situation where you (or someone you know) had to make a decision that involved dirty hands. 2. Discuss a situation where it would be unwise to allow your private morality to influence the decisions you make at work. 3. Discuss a situation where you believe it would be right to enforce your personal morals in the workplace over the expectations of your employer. 4. Reflect on a time when you or someone you know had to make a decision in the workplace where the difference between their public and private morals played a role. 1. Describe your specific experience or situation. In depicting your example, please ensure you portray the people involved (including yourself, if involved) and their respective roles, the
situation, and any additional information that would be helpful for the reader to understand your example. During one of my friend’s co-op, she mentioned a situation where a hospital administrator during the COVID-19 pandemic was facing a dire shortage of ventilators. In those challenging circumstances, there was only one ventilator left, and two patients urgently needed it. One patient was a young mother of two, otherwise healthy, and with a high chance of survival if provided with the ventilator. The other patient was an elderly individual in the ICU who has a lower chance of survival but has been a long-standing donor to the hospital and holds significant community influence. The administrator was confronted with the difficult task of deciding who should receive the ventilator, knowing that his choice would determine life or death for one of these patients. 2. Examine your example by connecting it to your learning from the course content. What specific concept(s) from Unit 01 or Unit 02 are relevant to your example? How did/does this example reinforce (or challenge) your own morality or the morality of the person you described in your example? Reference specific course material where applicable. In this scenario, the hospital administrator, deals with the concept of ‘dirty hands’. The concept of dirty hands suggests that individuals in positions of authority may encounter situations where they must make morally conflicted decisions to fulfill their public roles or responsibilities. In this case, his public role as a hospital administrator requires him to allocate limited ventilators impartially and based on medical need. The dilemma underscores the tension between his private moral values and his public duty. His private morality may incline him to prioritize saving the young mother due to her higher chances of survival. However, his public role demands that he consider broader ethical principles such as justice and fairness in resource allocation, even if it means making a morally uncomfortable choice. David's decision-making process is further complicated by the influence of public vs. private morality. On one hand, his private moral compass may urge him to prioritize the young mother's life, valuing individual well-being. On the other hand, his public morality calls for prioritizing the greater good, which may involve making difficult decisions that challenge his personal ethical inclinations. 3. Articulate your learning by sharing what you do if you were presented with such a situation in the future? What factors might you consider to help influence your ethical decision making? What additional information might you need to make an informed decision? If faced with such a situation in the future, I would seek input from a diverse group of stakeholders, including ethics experts, medical professionals, and patient advocates. I would prioritize transparency in decision-making and consider factors like patient prognosis, the principle of utility (maximizing overall benefit), and ensuring that decisions are not influenced by financial considerations or personal connections. To make an informed decision, I would also gather as much medical information as possible

to assess the patients' chances of recovery. I would continuously reflect on my ethical principles and seek guidance from established ethical frameworks and committees within the hospital.
