Community policing
– “A philosophy that promotes organizational strategies, which support the systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques, to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public-safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime.”

Community relations unit responsibilities include assisting neighborhood watch groups with their concerns and make citizen contacts to determine crime problems within their area.
This program meets the definition of community policing because the definition states that “The systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime.” Police officers are creating relationships within the community to determine issues within the community.

Community outreach or Relationship based policing focuses on developing a relationship between SBPD and the community it serves. By interacting with the community and developing strong relationships a mutual trust can be built. With that trust crime and the fear of crime can be reduced.
This program also meets the definition because once again it is involving not only the police but the community as well. With better relationships they can help stop crime together.
