According to the text, what is the basis of how we are judged by God? Why can’t even the smallest sin be acceptable in his presence? Explain.
“
When God judges the world, he does so by holding up his standard of righteousness. Because God is perfectly righteous, he does not as we often do, grade on a curve,”
(Tennent, 2014, p. 28)
. God’s standards are made in the image of him; therefore they are made with perfect holiness. Whenever someone sins, it opposes God and because of that, no sin can be acceptable in his presence. b.
What is the connection between holiness and our approach to God and our relationship with him as described by Dr. Tennent? Why is it so important?
“Holiness is not merely about keeping laws or rules better than the next person. Holiness is about our whole relationship with God, and how we embody his image personally and before the world,” (Tennent, 2014, p. 29)
. In other words, how we act in holiness is how we
act within our relationship with God. When we sin, we are actively going against God and his holiness. c.
Describe the role and at least two purposes of God’s judgment in the Bible based on the reading.
“God looks at the world and sees all of the destructive powers of evil unleashed in the world, and he is determined to set it right and restore his creation to its original design of glory and holiness,” (Tennent, 2014, p. 29)
. One of Gods purpose for judgement is to “demonstrate in a vivid way the consequences of sin,” (Tennent, 2014, p. 33)
. Another purpose of Gods judgement is “just as immediate judgement quickens our hearts and leads us to repentance, delayed judgement gives the necessary time for reflection, repentance, and the reception of the means of grace,” (Tennent, 2014, p. 34)
. d.
Psalm 110 states that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. How is knowledge of the law and fear of judgment important for life and decision-making? How does it help people to change? How do you see this principle as relevant to social work or society?
I see this principle as relevant to social work or society by having compassion and being less judgmental of those around us and what they are going through. Having compassion and empathy for our clients is great because it can help them get through whatever they are going through. References
