1 Ethical Rogerian Argument Thesis/Outline Assignment Thesis Statement: Humans should advance in developing artificial intelligence (AI) to the extent that it remains aligned with ethical principles designed to maximize societal benefits and minimize risks, ensuring equitable and just outcomes for all. Introduction:
2 Background on AI: Artificial Intelligence (AI) relates to the collection of technologies that support the imitation of human intelligence processes. The field has experienced exponential growth thanks to progress in the capacities and accessibility of computing hardware, the availability of large datasets, and improvements in the algorithms used for training machines for learning. Importance of Ethical Considerations: Now that AI is fully established in society, there needs to be an ethical framework to ensure its development. These boundaries make an excellent precaution to ensure that these AI technologies benefit society and are not detrimental. Sources Introduction: Based on the above topics, five academic sources that discuss different dimensions of artificial intelligence ethics and its impact on society will be included in this discussion. Significance of the Debate: Ethical considerations for AI are essential as these technologies become a part of human daily life across various sectors, ranging from health care to justice systems, with the possibility of shifting the forefronts of societal values. Main Argument: Ethical Frameworks for AI Principle-Based Approach (Florida & Cowls, 2022) : o Floridi and Cowls include five key principles that can unite the regulation of AI applications. These are the principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, justice, and explicability.
3 o Paraphrase: These principles aim to promote good technologies and ensure they are beneficial to human existence while avoiding the development of potentially dangerous technologies (Florida & Cowls, 2022). Lessons from Political Philosophy (Binns, 2018) : o In the identified paper, Binns relates the efficiency of machine learning to principles from political philosophy, stressing the role of justice in applying artificial intelligence systems. o Paraphrase: Political philosophy guarantees a sound theoretical foundation regarding the possibilities of using AI so that it will not reflect and reinforce different forms of discrimination in any segment of society (Binns, 2018). Application in Real-World Scenarios : Provide examples of specific implementations where ethical AI frameworks have effectively managed risks and optimized overall gains, including predictive Policing and diagnosis in health facilities. Opposing Arguments: Risks and Ethical Concerns Potential for Bias and Inequality : o Paraphrase: While algorithms help people or organizations in decision-making, they can worsen or enlarge social biases (Mittelstadt et al., 2016). o This risk is most concerning with recruitment and lending decisions and law enforcement, where biased AI systems could compound existing socio-economic disadvantage.
