Assess and Address Bias Worksheet
Read each scenario and answer each question that followsin detail. Cite your sources on the reference page in APA format, and include in-text citations to support your points at least once per scenario. Review the scoring guide, which you can use as a checklist to ensure that your responses contain the required content.
Scenario 1
After a busy Saturday night in the emergency department (ED), a physician sees a patient at 4:30 a.m. This patient is a man in his 50s who has been to the ED two other times in the last two weeks. Each time he has complained of back and stomach pain, and the ED staff suspect that the man is dependent on pain medication. Thinking this is just another example of the man seeking pain medication, the physician examines him and reports that his vital signs are in the normal range. The physician sends the patient home with a prescription for a small number of pain pills. Later that day, the man returns and requires emergency surgery for a life-threatening condition that the ED physician overlooked. Answer the following questions about this scenario:
a)
What type of bias does this scenario illustrate? This scenario illustrates confirmation bias, which is the tendency to seek, interpret, and remember information in a way that confirms preconceived beliefs or notions. In this case, the physician had preconceived beliefs that the patient was seeking pain medication, which biased their assessment and diagnosis.
b)
How might the physician have used critical thinking skills to avoid or overcome this bias?
To avoid or overcome confirmation bias, the physician could have used critical thinking skills by remaining open-minded, considering alternative explanations, relying on evidence-based medicine, asking probing questions, and actively listening to the patient's symptoms and concerns.
c)
What solution would you propose for preventing this kind of situation? To prevent such situations, several solutions can be proposed, including training and education on recognizing and addressing bias in clinical practice, implementing clinical decision support tools, promoting a multidisciplinary approach, providing regular supervision and feedback, enhancing communication between healthcare providers and patients, and monitoring clinical outcomes to identify and address bias-related disparities in care. These measures aim to foster a culture of self-awareness, openness, and continuous learning within the healthcare system to reduce bias and provide equitable care to all patients.
Scenario 2
On April 12, 2018, two black men, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson, met at a Philadelphia Starbucks and waited for their friend Andrew Yaffe, a white real estate developer with whom they planned to discuss business opportunities. While they waited, an employee asked if the two men needed assistance. After they told her “no” and noted they were waiting for a business meeting, a manager told Nelson that he could not use the restroom unless he was a paying customer. The manager then called the police because the two men had not yet purchased anything, despite the fact that Robinson had been a long-time paying customer at that Starbucks and both men had used that Starbucks location for business meetings before. For more on what happened next, review the resources linked in Preparation. Then, Answer the following questions about this scenario: 1
a)
What type of bias does this incident illustrate? This incident illustrates racial bias and discrimination, specifically racial profiling, as the two black men were treated differently based on their race, leading to the involvement of the police.
b)
In what ways can critical thinking reduce or eliminate the kind of bias and stereotypes displayed in this incident? Critical thinking can reduce or eliminate bias and stereotypes displayed in this incident by encouraging individuals to question their assumptions, promote empathy, base decisions on evidence and objective information, and challenge whether their actions are fair and just.
c)
Do you think the kind of training Starbucks implemented will prevent or reduce these kind of incidents in the future? Why or why not? If not, what solution do you suggest? While Starbucks' racial bias training is a positive step, it may not entirely eliminate bias. To prevent and reduce these incidents, continued education on diversity and inclusion, accountability for employees, diverse hiring and leadership representation, and clear reporting mechanisms for incidents of bias and discrimination are also crucial. These measures, when combined, can lead to a more lasting and effective reduction of bias-
related incidents in the long term.
Scenario 3
Benny and Delilah are brother and sister but have opposing views when it comes to their political beliefs and preferences. Benny listens to conservative talk radio and only watches Fox News for his political news, while Delilah listens to a progressive radio show and only watches MSNBC to stay informed. During a particularly heated debate about the use of welfare and food stamps, Benny expresses his frustration with welfare and declares that “most people abuse the system.” Delilah argues that while some people may abuse the system, she knows that most use it as a temporary solution and children are its main beneficiaries. Answer each of the following questions about this scenario:
a)
How is bias affecting Benny’s and Delilah’s perspectives? Bias is influencing Benny and Delilah's political perspectives in distinct ways. Benny, who predominantly consumes conservative talk radio and watches Fox News, is inclined to believe that "most people abuse the system" in relation to welfare. This bias can be attributed to the one-sided and
potentially sensationalized portrayal of welfare issues he encounters from his chosen sources. In contrast, Delilah, who follows a progressive radio show and MSNBC, holds a
perspective that leans toward a more positive view of welfare. She believes that while some individuals may misuse the system, most use it as a temporary solution, and she emphasizes that children are the primary beneficiaries. Her bias appears to be shaped by the positive portrayal of welfare from her preferred media outlets and might not fully recognize potential issues related to abuse.
b)
How can the critical thinking process be used to recognize and reduce political bias in this kind of situation? The critical thinking process can play a pivotal role in recognizing and reducing political bias in this situation. It encourages information diversification, prompting both Benny and Delilah to seek information from various sources beyond their
usual media outlets, fostering a more balanced and nuanced understanding of complex political issues like welfare. Additionally, critical thinking involves fact-checking and verification, enabling individuals to assess the accuracy of claims and statistics presented in political discussions, thus avoiding accepting information uncritically and instead critically evaluating its validity. Open-mindedness is another key aspect, promoting receptivity to diverse viewpoints and the willingness to engage in constructive dialogue while actively listening to each other's arguments without immediate dismissal. 2
