Place the name of your two strategies as the first line of your post.
Modeling Behavior & Classroom Jobs
Explain how negative behavior, misbehaviors and challenging behaviors were handled in your daycare, preschool, or school when you were young.
Were they handled in a manner rooted in fostering classroom community by supporting moral development? Why or why not?
While in school I do remember a few instances where a misbehavior was handled. I do remember flipping colored cards from green, to yellow, and then to red when we were doing things we were not supposed to be. Another
incident I remember in school was being sent to the back of the room for talking. In the manner that these situations were handled were not in a way to support moral development. Moral behavior is a concept that is more than
just following the rules. Moral behavior involves critical thinking, sensitivity to others, and making judgements as far as what is appropriate in different circumstances (Miller, 2023). Simply being told to flip my card or move to the
back of the room, after a misbehavior does not foster moral development as those reactions did not involve critical thinking or an explanation.
Describe how your two chosen strategies will help to support positive guidance through fostering classroom community by supporting moral development.
Modeling is essential for children, especially ages zero to five, as they learn through observing (Children’s Wisconsin, 2021). To help support moral development in children we can model positive behavior and interactions with others. We can model behaviors such as empathy and compassion. As educators we can model prosocial behavior, which can help children to treat others with respect (Miller, 2023). Classroom jobs are a great way to help build a sense of community. Classroom jobs are a way to help children feel a part of the classroom and a way to help them contribute to the room. Classroom jobs can help children with building self-control, respect, kindness,
and tolerance which are virtues that are basic to moral intelligence.
