What challenges to completion do you anticipate you will encounter in your doctoral
program?
The article highlighted three specific types of doctoral completers, which is ironic in the sense
that only one of them results in completion of a doctoral program. So, within the first few lines
of this article, it is already discussing the high probability of an individual not being able to
complete their doctoral program. For myself, I recognize a lot of barriers that are currently
factors in my life for not completing my doctoral program. The first being personal factors, I like
to call these factors Jameson, Parker, and Collins, also known as my 7-year-old, 4-year-old, and
2-year-old. It is no secret that being a parent is a full-time job and then some, so in addition to
my full-time job, I am also a mother of three young children, and am diligently working towards
my doctorate degree. One could say I am working three full time jobs while jumping through
hoops of fire and balancing spinning plates on my head. According to Northwestern University
female graduate and doctoral students with a dual commitment to parenting and academic life
often find themselves facing pressures equivalent to holding down two full-time jobs (Lundquist
et al., 2021). I anticipate fulfilling my role as a mother and as a doctoral student will be one of
the largest and most important challenges I will face while completing my doctoral program. An
additional challenge I anticipate encountering will be imposter syndrome, which I currently
suffer from on occasion within my profession. I am a first-generation college graduate, graduate
program graduate, and doctoral student, so I frequently feel as though I am wearing shoes that I
cannot possibly fulfil or meet the standards of. Within the article it discusses how imposter
syndrome can often lead to self-doubt and perfectionism burnout. As an individual I have
suffered from perfectionism and OCD tendencies which in the past have led to burnout. Because
I am hyper-aware of this challenge within myself, I am hopeful that I will be able to be diligent
in ensuring that while I work hard, I am not creating an unhealthy expectation of myself or my
capabilities. The article mentions that times of transition, new challenges, and high-stakes
assignments could cause impostor feelings to surface, even in otherwise confident, high-
performing adults (Marshall et al., 2017). I anticipate the further into the program I get and the
higher the expectations become the more susceptible I will become to imposter syndrome. What strategies for successful completion do you anticipate will be the most useful for you,
and how will you work toward implementing these strategies to meet your goals?
The article speaks on what are considered to be strategies that help doctoral students successfully
complete their doctoral program which are the following; effective communication with their
chairperson, being aware and identifying imposter-syndrome, having self-awareness during the
dissertation phase of the doctoral program, and finally building writing and research skills
throughout their coursework. Of these suggested strategies I anticipate the most helpful to me
will be the self-identification of imposter syndrome because this is also one of the challenges, I
anticipate encountering during my doctoral program. According to the article rather than
