An endoscopy is a nonsurgical procedure used to examine a person's digestive tract. Using a flexible
tube with a light and camera attached to it, the HCP can view pictures of the digestive tract on a color TV monitor.
During an upper endoscopy, an endoscope is easily passed through the mouth and throat and into the esophagus,
allowing the HCP to view the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestine
Diagnostic Purposes:
Investigating gastrointestinal symptoms such as
abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, foreign obect
and difficulty swallowing.
Can collect a biopsy.
Involves the analysis and understanding of the findings
observed during the endoscopic examination of the
internal organs or cavities of the body
-Bleeding
-Perforation
-Infection
-Adverse reaction to sedation medication

Endoscopy
-Do not eat or drink anything for 6 to 8 hours before the procedure.
-A local anesthetic will be used in your throat and you will begiven a sedative
during the procedure. After the procedure, you will be allowed to eat and
drink assoon as your gag reflex returns and you are able to swallow.-
You may experience mild bloating, belching, or flatulence following the
procedure.-
Contact your physician immediately if you develop any of thefollowing:
difficulty swallowing; epigastric, vomiting blood or black tarry stools; or fever
-Observing patient vital signs.
-Administering the necessary medication to patients.
-Keeping the patient informed throughout the duration of the procedure.
-Completing all necessary documentation including patient notes and
discharge documents.-Preparing the instruments, equipment, and supplies
for the procedure.
-Cleaning and sterilizing equipment before use.
-Providing assistance to Doctors throughout the procedure.
Pre: Pt education, NPO, consent, pre-procedural prepartion
During: Monitoring VS, assistance to physician
Post: Recovery, monitoring, pain management, pt discharge
