MEDICATIONS
PURPOSE:
To establish dental service policy and procedure for the dispensing of medications to patients as part of dental treatment.
POLICY:
Medications will be dispensed to patients in conformance with regulations set forth in M-4, Dentistry; and Medical Center Memorandum (MCM) SS-PHA-03 and SS-PHA-19, Medication:Ordering/Dispensing/Assessment/Reconciliation/Education –Inpatient and Outpatient

RESPONSIBILITY:
All dentists assigned to dental service will be responsible for prescribing narcotics and non-narcotic medications for patients.
PROCEDURES:
a.
Non-narcotic and narcotic medications may be prescribed for inpatients by use of the
Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) or if not available use of VA For 10-2577d, Prescription Form and the action profile is appropriate.
b. Non-narcotic and narcotic medications may be prescribed for outpatients by use of CPRS. All dentists will include their Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration number, as assigned by this Medical Center, on all handwritten outpatient prescriptions for controlled substances. All prescriptions for Schedule II controlled substances must be written on VA Form 10-2577F, by the prescriber (and at this time may not be ordered via CPRS). c. Documentation of the prescribing of medications will also be made in CPRS via the Medical Record Progress Note, or if not available, form 10-1158, Doctors Orders. REFERENCE:
