Please discuss all of your current and recent activities and engagements that have prepared you for medical school. Please be sure to include any traditional and/or non-traditional clinical exposures and volunteering experiences that you have done that are not already included in your application. (2000 characters) Volunteering at the PICU served as a cornerstone in my journey, teaching me the significance of forming connections with patients on a personal level. One particular patient, "Jen," left an indelible mark on me with her determination to pursue her artistic dreams despite battling asthma. Jen's resilience in the face of medical adversities showcased her remarkable spirit. Her talent for painting not only provided her with an outlet for self-expression but also allowed her to find solace amidst her challenges. The bonds formed during my time at the PICU with Jen and other patients solidified my aspiration to provide patient-centered care with compassion and dignity. Through my role
as a volunteer, I honed my interpersonal skills and cultivated empathy.
My role as a medical scribe in a prominent orthopedic clinic further enriched my preparation for medical school. By relieving physicians of note-taking tasks, I enable them to focus entirely on delivering exceptional medical care, thereby preventing physician burnout. My fulfillment in this role stems from the understanding that my efforts indirectly impact patient care. Collaborating closely with physicians and fellow scribes, I actively engage in knowledge-sharing and skill improvement. This collaborative environment fosters growth and innovation as we collectively seek to enhance our efficiency and accuracy in note-taking.
Outside of my clinical and volunteering commitments, I co-organize a competitive soccer
team within the community. Bringing together like-minded individuals with a shared drive for success on the field, we train, strategize, and compete in local leagues and tournaments. Each of these experiences contributes uniquely to my growth as an individual and preparedness for medical school
. The interpersonal skills cultivated through my PICU interactions and my dedication to efficient and accurate medical documentation are foundational skills that will surely serve me well in the rigor of medical school.

Why are you interested in Drexel? Please also explain how you meet various elements of our mission
- compassionate care, diversity, spirited inquiry, collaboration, and opportunity. (1500 characters) Growing up in Malaysia, I experienced the harsh realities of racism and colorism. I vividly remember the disappointment of being excluded from the school soccer team due to ethnic quotas and enduring discrimination because of my darker skin. I used skin whitening products to fit in, subjecting my skin to harmful chemicals. These adversities
fuel my aspiration to enrich discussions and foster a greater understanding of different perspectives, contributing to a more inclusive learning environment at Drexel.
As a former peer leader and captain of the Berea College soccer team, I fostered collaboration through mentorship and advocacy, cultivating an environment where diverse viewpoints contribute to problem-solving. My involvement in these collaborative environments has taught me the value of approaching challenges from multiple perspectives. Hence, I am drawn to Drexel's Foundations and Frontiers approach to medical education, emphasizing teamwork and interdisciplinary education. The Independent Learning modules at Drexel offer a perfect opportunity to delve into career interests, engage in community service, and pursue my cardiovascular research interests. The Medical Research Scholars Program allows me to integrate scientific inquiry into my medical school curriculum. Drexel's innovative curriculum, tailored to shape physicians for the challenges of the 21st century, is a perfect fit for my aspirations and provides a platform to thrive in a rapidly evolving medical landscape.

Please describe any extenuating circumstances due to the Covid-19 outbreak that may have affected your medical or non-medical service experiences, including any circumstances that impacted your engagement in activities, academics, and MCAT that would have helped to prepare you for medical school. (1500 characters) The sudden campus evacuation following the Covid-19 outbreak forced me to find alternative accommodations, and since my family was residing in Malaysia, I found myself homeless. Some nights, I resorted to sleeping in my car, surrounded by all my belongings. I contacted local organizations, shelters, and my network of friends for temporary accommodations. Fortunately, I received assistance from caring friends and their families, who provided me with shelter and kindness. Similar evacuations at the University of Kentucky also thwarted my plan to continue doing research during this gap year.
Eventually, I had the opportunity to return to Malaysia and reunite with my family, but a nationwide lockdown extended my stay. This affected my plans to take the MCAT, causing delays in my medical school applications. That year, I could not gain any clinical
experience as hospitals refused to accept volunteers. While the pandemic challenged the conventional ways of engaging in clinical service, it forced me to think of alternate ways to contribute to the community. I secured volunteering opportunities at Covid screening centers and a food drive, delivering groceries to those in quarantine.
I am determined to compensate for lost time and pursue medicine with renewed vigor. For example, I plan to volunteer at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital and fulfill my
duties as a scribe. The challenges of the pandemic have only reinforced my resolve to contribute and make a meaningful impact in healthcare.
