Commission on Cancer (CoC)
The Commission on Cancer (CoC) is a cancer program under the American College of Surgeons (ACS) that improves survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality of care (ACS, 2023). This program was established in 1922 and is multidisciplinary in nature. This involvement includes but not limited to surgeons, medical oncology, quality, radiation oncology, nutrition/dietary, social services, diagnostic imaging, pathology/lab, medical records, cancer registry, nursing/ navigation and administration. A CoC accredited cancer program must meet 34 quality care standards and must be evaluated every three years. These standards cover:
Prevention and Screening
Evaluation and Decision-Making
Treatment
Surveillance
Administrative; Organization; Facility; Credentials
Quality Improvement and Accountability
Evidence and Research
There are many benefits for a center in obtaining this accreditation such as recruitment and retention of top-level physicians and medical professionals, access to quality reports and benchmarks of centers nationwide and public recognition to the centers commitment to care to patients. However, these benefits are not easy to achieve and very costly to maintain. Each quality measure takes significant time and effort to achieve and maintain and in a day where reimbursements in healthcare are being cut many organizations are looking to reduce those areas providing non-revenue producing services. In addition, healthcare has faced tremendous obstacles over the last few years in terms of staffing. As a nation, we have seen severe staffing shortages in healthcare and many hospitals have shifted staffing efforts into aiding our efforts in combating COVID-19. As a result the CoC has been willing to work with our institution and has
acknowledged these struggles and are going to be working with us on this in our reaccreditation survey.
