Scientist Spotlight: Irina Burd
To help us prepare for what we are about to study in our class, we are going to explore the work of Irina Burd. Irina Burd, MD, PhD is a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist. She currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Maryland. Dr. Burd has a research focus on fetal development with
exposure to inflammations and infections. She also has clinical expertise in high-risk pregnancies. Dr. Burd has made numerous contributions in maternal-fetal medicine and received numerous honors within her physician-scientist career. Click the link to learn more about the background of Irina Burd

Instructions for Written Assignment: After reviewing the background and scientific work of Irina Burd, write a reflection on what you discovered. You might wish to address some of the following: 1.
What was most interesting to you in reviewing these resources?
Something interesting that I learned through reviewing those resources is that Burd discovered that when children are exposed to HIV but are also noninfected, they are more likely to die from other infectious diseases other than HIV in their early childhood years. This is inspiring and motivating her to do similar studies on the effect of COVID-19 on pregnant women and if there are long-term bad outcomes because of this. The exposed neonates from these pregnant women could have bad outcomes long term so it is important to study it. 2.
What did you learn from these resources about fetal development and medicine?
Through these resources I learned that the consequences of COVID-19 on fetal development are still unknown and we do not know nor understand what the possible implications could be about what COVID-19 plus the flu could be on Source of Scientist Photo: https://www.medschool.umaryland.edu/profiles/burd-irina/

neonates. Another thing that I learned is that one of her studies established that exposure to inflammation which still inside the uterus can lead to placental inflammation. This then alters the gray matter development and it can all come together and affect the long term neurobehavioral factors of the fetus. She then is continuing to build upon this revelation through seeing where it can take her in the clinical, translational, and basic science research. 3.
What new questions do you have after reviewing these resources?
Some question I have are what can we do to find therapeutic innovations and try to solve this problem. Is it possible to use other models such as mice models in an attempt to find the answers to what happens when there is interuterine inflammation.
What are the neurobehavioral consequences that happen when there is inflammation in the mother? Why did Burd choose to study the crosssection of virology and neo-natal medicine?
4.
What do these resources tell you about the types of people that do science?
There resources taught me that there is always a way for us to find answers to critical scientific questions. I think that it is important to challenge norms and advocate for underrepresented communities such as women in medicine because through making sure that we are pushing more discoveries for them we can create more equity in medicine. I find the work that Burd is doing very inspiring and something that I also want to carry into my career as someone that adovates for the health of all people. About the Author: My name is Vijya Raj. I am currently in the process of completing my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at San Francisco State University. Women’s health has been neglected in medical research and I wanted to highlight a scientist who is passionately dedicated to advancing
clinical research for the betterment of an under-researched field. I chose to spotlight Dr. Irina Burd because of her involvement in research regarding the effects of COVID-19 during pregnancy and its
effects on fetal development. I’ve had the intention of entering a career in obstetrics and gynecology with a specialty in maternal-fetal medicine, much like Dr. Burd.
