Discuss what “family-centered medical care” involves. Be sure to identify and describe how a family counselor would integrate his or her work into the medical care of a family member. Include at least one scholarly source to support your response. Cite any scholarly references accordingly using in-
text citations and a reference list.
Good evening class!
Family-centered medical care is a form of multidisciplinary care provided to clients and families that involves integrative and unique client treatment and care services that promote family involvement through partnership reared support (Kuo et al., 2011). When counselors are involved in the support team of a client or family, this is also considered to be family-
centered medical care. Counselors involved in family-centered care should ensure that they are consistently communicating with all other professionals involved in the client's care such as physicians, social workers, health care providers and many other professionals. In my current role and employment position as a support coordinator for the disabled community, I
myself am involved in many faucets of family-centered care. It is my responsibility to coordinate the care needs of all of my clients, communicate with medical professionals and consistently communicate with and update in-home service providers which are the individuals who provide direct client care for my clients. The counselors role in family-centered medical care should consist of facilitating effective communication and promote clarity within communication between clients, their family, and all involved medical professionals. Another responsibility of the counselor is to assist clients and families in constructively expressing concerns, needs, and decision-making with other involved parties that contribute to the overall well being and promotion of the client's mental and physical health. Overall, family-centered medical care involves supporting families, facilitating a trusting environment, and providing families with other beneficial resources to promote their growth through multidisciplinary work (Kuo et al., 2011).
