Dramatization of Discharge Instructions
This assignment is designed to help you prepare for discharging a patient with a serious medical or surgical condition from the hospital. This will combine your knowledge of pathology, pharmacology, and
surgery, as well as teaching you about client interaction. This assignment will help you understand your strength and weaknesses in communication. Please choose one of the scenarios provided. The assignment is to prepare written discharge instructions for the patient in the scenario and also present these orally to a “client.” You will be graded
on both the oral and written portions of the assignment. Your oral presentation will be in front of an instruction with a “client” of the instructor’s choosing.
The written instructions must look professionally prepared. They must include a clinic logo, pet and owner name, description of condition, medications to go home, what clinical signs to monitor for the patient, when to call if problems arise, clinic contact information, recheck appointment. You must also provide your references in APA format.
When presenting the oral instructions to the “client”, you must use patient and owner name, shake hands with the client, introduce yourself with your credentials, present the information from the written
instructions, and answer any client questions. If medication is dispensed, you should be prepared to demonstrate how it is administered. You will be assessed on your eye contact, body language, listening skills and knowledge, in addition to your ability to display empathy toward the “client.”
Please see the rubric for specific grading information.
