According to the Canadian Pediatric Society (2017), roughly 30,000 school-aged children in
Canada, and 7,000 in Ontario, have type 1 diabetes, a chronic condition wherein the pancreas
creates little to no insulin, which helps sugar enter cells and be used for energy. The fastest-
growing group of newly diagnosed patients are those under five years old. Based on the number
of cases, it is estimated that there is at least one child in every school with type 1 diabetes
(Canadian Pediatric Society, 2017). Article 24 of the UNCRC states that every child has the right
to have the best health possible (UNCRC, 1989). However, Ontario schools have no policy nor
guidelines on managing type 1 diabetes in schools, which means that if a complication occurs,
the child will not have the proper care, thus, failing to fulfill article 24 of the UNCRC. As a nurse
and an advocate for health, I would encourage the schools in the province to make guidelines for
type 1 diabetes for people to know what steps to take when certain situations arise. The most
important step is providing education. Not all schools have on-site school nurses, which is why it
is important for all school staff to be knowledgeable about type 1 diabetes; how to manage
hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, monitor blood glucose, and insulin administration. Education
can be done through seminars and training. Another is ensuring they know how and when to
contact further assistance and emergency services if the situation worsens. Emergency contact
numbers should be available and posted throughout the school for everyone to see. By adding
these steps to school guidelines, we can make sure that every child with type 1 diabetes will have
a chance to have better care and a better health outcome.
